The old saying about a tough day at black rock doesn't come close to describing this tournament. Conditions were not good for catching crappie. Several teams didn't find a fish on tournament day. And some could only manage small fish. However, when you put good crappie fishermen on the water, somebody usually finds some fish and that was the case for Guy Skinner and David Goodson. They fished timber with jigs only and managed an impressive weight of 11.55 lbs in very tough conditions.

Max and I pre-fished Thur and Fri and managed one crappie in two days. Found another one Sat which was 2 crappie in three days fishing. We fished a variety of depths from 13-42 ft; some brush piles, lay downs, standing timber, drop offs, bridges, you name it, we fished it. We tried jigs, minnows and jigs tipped with minnows. The fishing was the same for us every where, NADA. We found lots of shad scattered everywhere from 25-40 FOW. Tournament day was NE wind at 4 that kept building to about 10 mph by 11, temp 43 with light rain starting about noon.

There were 12 teams in Div I and 7 in Div II.

DIV II - Only 4 teams weighed in fish in Div II
1 Clay Gann/Todd Froebe 3.93
2 Jimmy Leonard/Sturat Angelle 2.99 Big Fish 1.53
3 Ron Conaster/Bruno Brummett 1.72
4 Clinton Joseph/Clinton Joseph III 1.05

Div I - four teams managed 7 fish
1 Guy Skinner/David Goodson 11.55
2 Tommy Ezell/Richard James 9.31
3 Chris and Willie Scott 7.30
4 Jeff Schweiterman/James Rains 6.49
5 Paul O'Bier/George Nelon 6.37 Big Fish 2.49

Yes it was a tough day on the water with conditions as they were. Congrats to all that participated. Guy and I knew we would have our work cut out for us. With conditions of the lake changing daily we decided to do our early pre-fishing from the computer. In studying the lake maps we put a plan of action together. With the lake up as it was and the gates open we knew the fish would not be where they should be this time of year for LOP. We looked at areas we would have fished in the fall averaging 15' of water knowing the lake being up would put us in water 27 plus ft. in these areas. The fish never moved. They did not need to as the water rising put them in depth they wanted to be in.

Once we determined our thoughts were on the right track we went to work. Now as you can imagine getting them to bite was another task. We tried many colors, depth, scent, size of jig, minnow. Nothing/Notta/Zilch. Guy went to trying something way out of the box and it was the ticket to our 7 fish limit.

We had a very large amount of lay downs in 27' of water holding fish from the bottom up to 5' off the bottom. Guy Skinner and I both brought our new 5'5" Pro Angler Rods for what ever reason and we are glad that we did. Guy Skinner down sized with a 1/32 oz jig head and with the 5'5" rod went to work. I thought now he has lost his mind.

It was windy but where we were made it fish-able. It seemed like days before the 1/32 oz jig made it to the bottom in 27' of water in breezing conditions but when it did and you moved it you would feel a subtle tick or it would just get heavy. It did not take me long to figure out what I needed to do.

We were culling fish by 10:30 a.m and we shut it down about 2:00pm. We brought to the scale 7 fish at 11.55 pounds. All Black Crappie and never imagined we would take 1st place. We were thinking maybe, just maybe a top 5.

We are ready for the next challenge.

Never stop thinking outside the box. Tight Lines....

Great report David. Weighing the option of fishing a 1/32 or not catching fish would be a difficult decision for me. roflmao

Way to go.
