Have there been any major problems with this engine? I'm looking at a boat with this unit on it.

they are good motors as long as the fuel system is maintained by changing all the filters every 100 hrs most folks don't .

Just had to replace the fuel pump on my 175 HPDI. Came on my Skeeter TZX 190 when I bought it new in 2003. First repair in 15 years, so I'd say it has been a good engine for me.

I have a 2006 Vmax HPDi 250... blew the powerhead after 192 hours. Don't buy one!

What did the mechanic say caused the failure?

What did the mechanic say caused the failure?

192 hours on a ten year old motor, I would say lack of use.

I have had my 175 for over three years now and it still starts on barely a kick of the starter.
The small block HPDIs are very reliable by what I have read and seen with my own.
The big block (200hp+) can have issues if the fuel system is not taken care of meticulously.

192 hrs, 10 years is a pretty long time to have anything run problem free, I have a 2006 VMAX 150 with 400+- hrs and I treat it like a rented mule, never had an issue (that I couldn't fix in the driveway). There are guys on the coast putting these motors on new hulls, they must be junk

These Yamaha motors are set up real rich on oil and require a carbon cleaning additive 100% of the time they are run. Yamaha Ring Free, Sea Foam or Quick clean. Have seen several blow up after changing owners. Majority quit using the carbon clean.
