I usually look for the nearest house, farm or otherwise, and ask permission or ask if they know the landowner. The worst they can do is say no, then you move on down the creek past their property, that is not posted and go exploring there. you can usually find a spot that holds fish, and is hassle free.

BTW, what's wrong with asking as opposed to the "thug life"?

If I really want to learn more about fishing creeks, I drop the cash to pay for a Guide. If you don't like "Trial and Error" approach for whatever reason, just pay for the Guide and pick their brain. I know there are some Guides that do fishing trips on the creeks.

That's a good idea. Sometimes I have my 9 year old daughter with me and I'd rather teach her to ask permission than trespassing.

I use google street view for this. You can pull up the street that you are thinking of parking on and see if there are any signs most of the times.
