I thought some of you might find this interesting. I spent several years collecting tens of thousands of data points on freshwater predator fish catches from a variety of sources. Much of the data was tied to bass fishing. I combined the data with detailed location specific weather information and then ran statistics on it to determine which variables had the biggest impact on catch rates. I published the findings in a book I recently wrote. You can find it on Amazon under the title “High Percentage Fishing.”

The first half of the book examines big bass wisdom from Doug Hannon (the bass professor), John Hope (tracking studies) and Bill Murphy (famed west coast trophy hunter). It compares and contrasts their different views on big bass behavior and ultimately attempts to bring them together. The second half of the book is about the findings from the data analysis. It covers everything from the best times to fish, lure selection, impact of weather, the moon, and fishing pressure. In one section I slice and dice all 500+ Texas ShareLunker catches as well. I like to think of it as the "Sabermetrics" of bass fishing.

Some of the findings are pretty darn interesting in my opinion. It has definitely changed the way I fish. Happy to answer any questions if you have them.

I would have taken you up on that offer a couple of months ago! I've got a whole new respect for authors after working on this project for the better part of three years. At least I can scratch book writing off the bucket list!

Awesome. I'm no Hemingway, but hopefully you'll learn something from the book. Here is an example of one of the charts in the book. 40,000 catches stratified by hour and month. The percentages represent the percent of fish caught during that time slot during that month.

This is one of the things I write about in the book. I believe there is an "effort" bias in the data. I think it's got less to do with fish not biting as aggressively in the morning and more to do with people not wanting to get up super early. Essentially you've got more people fishing toward dusk than at the crack of dawn, so you wind up with a higher percentage in the evening. Think about how many boats you see at the ramp pre-dawn vs. an hour after sunrise. All that said, the data definitely confirms that low light periods tend to far out produce other times of the day.

Yes I'm aware. To the best of my knowledge I'm not violating rules posting here. I'm just sharing something I worked very hard on that's bass fishing related. I thought a few folks might find it interesting. PM me and I'll send you a copy. You might as well!

Maybe you should remove the Legend advertisement from your signature unless your posting in the Trading post.

Josh, good idea from Delvec. Put an ad in the classified section and another in the plugs & announcements.

This man helped me get out of the rut of unproductively and stubbornly dragging a worm around the same areas of a very popular lake, and helping me increase my catch rate. I trust his judgement and I'll be buying a copy of his book also.
