So I have never really done boat maintenance but I'm curious to know how muffs are used. I put them on the intake at the bottom of my motor but no water came out of the impeller. Is that normal? Did I do it wrong? Does it have to run for a certain amount of time? Just didn't want to ruin my motor.
Thanks for the help

Look it up on YouTube. For example...
"Run muffs on Yamaha f115"
You'll find a video that will show you

Attach the hose to the muffs, put the muffs on lower unit over the water intakes and turn on the water. I always wait a coupe minutes and will hold the muffs tighter sometimes and adjust them. Then start the motor, give it a few seconds to [censored], if it doesn't shut it down, use a small nail to make sure the [censored] hole is clear. Should [censored]. if not, take it to a mechanic. Water faucet on full blast and no kinks in the hose. One time I didn't turn it up high enough and the motor never spewed so I shut it down. My Mercury might be different but the motor should spew fairly quickly if you have enough water pressure/delivery and no problems with the pump.

I had one for my motor and it worked fine until I drove over it. Bought another one and it doesn't work either. Same house and same water pressure. I'm going to buy another one to try. I have plenty of pressure and no links so I can't really explain why some don't work.

My Mercury has a hose connection directly to it, it's a 2000 225 optimax, I figured all the newer outboards would have gone that direction or something similar

I ran into this issue last week. I had to get them in the exact right position to make it pick up. I had them too far back.

It has to be positioned exactly right over the pick up holes. You are supposed to have a little nose cone deal to stop the water from coming out there. I just hold my hand over the nose cone till it starts peeing then it's usually good.

Some motors have a thermostat that will not open until the motor reaches a set temp-this could delay the stream on a cold day.........for the motor I mean.

He recommends muffs if you plan to run the engine.

Yamaha Vmax 150. the water was spewing out everywhere from the muffs so i will assume after reading most of these threads that i had it wrong. i just hadn't ran the motor in several months and wanted to crank it up. i guess when i am by myself it is kind of hard to hold them in place and start the motor.
Thanks,

Make sure the muff is good and wet before you put in on. Nothing more frustrating than a dry muff...
