Seems my best days in the winter has bee the coldest raining or snowing days. They catch them on the ice in the north but it's mainly a personal decision on how much cold they can take

I was just watching a show on tv from up north and they were catching giant crappie on a frozen lake. It's crazy.

I so miss our heated dock on Grand Lake in OK on these cold mornings. Slip into a 72 dock and catch crappies when its in the 20's outside, in a T-shirt.

Todays superb clothing sure makes it easier to tolerate those cold mornings in the boat. Windproof outer clothing and merino wool base layers make it enjoyable.

Enjoyable or tolerable? Catching crappie in cold is great, but it's the cleaning that gets me. Hands are like ice after first dozen or so.

Back in my bass tournament days, I would get out on some really cold days. I don't do that any more. If it's below freezing, I'm usually at home.

That said, my other hobby is cycling, and I would rather fish on a cold day than ride a bicycle. So, in the winter, I tend to ride on the warmer days and fish on the colder ones ......... to a point.

weekend before last, I went to Ray Roberts Spillway, it was 24 when I got there at Sun up. went down to the cut and there was a guy already there, so we fished together. when you reeled your line in, the water would freeze up on the Eyelets.. I am thinking that is a bit too cold... Lol, caught a few, he caught most, for he was right over the pool, and they would not stray too far from there. I will stay above freezing from now on..

For crappie, unless creek, river or lake is frozen surface to mud, never too cold to catch crappie. Colder the better.vthatsxwhycthey make thermals and neoprene.
