I will be picking up a Feel Free Lure 11.5 tomorrow and I will have the rudder option! I will be normally fishing creeks and shallow water fishing 80-90% of the time the other 10% will be in open water over 10-20ft! Mostly bass and crappie fishing! Will the rudder be an asset or will it make alot of difference? Input is wanted!

It's not necessary but yes it is an asset. It does make a good difference in tracking but the added control and ability to keep positioned while drifting is the big bonus.

It will make a difference especially in a quartering or cross wind.
I'll never be without a rudder unless the water is to shallow to deploy.

Not as much of a difference in a smaller boat (less than 12 ft) but it will help in some cases as mentioned above and can be used to reduce swing in winds/currents when anchored or tied off in tandem with an anchor trolley. One recommendation, the rudder they install is the smart rudder system it has two different blade sizes give them both a try. Another thing on the rudder it has adjustable spring tension for deployment so if it is sticking or slamming down too hard you will need to adjust it.

The things I like most about the smart rudders, they use spring tension rather than cords to deploy so they are more likely to bounce back in to position when they hit things. The blade design is near indestructible I have abused both of the ones I have in fresh and salt water and the housing/mount is more likely to bend than the blade. The blade design has less drag than the other rudders which not only gives you better glide but turns better in my opinion.

It's worth it for better tracking, and really good when you get a nice drift going.

I test drove the Lure 11.5 and thought the rudder would've been a necessity had I purchased it.

By the way Jason ... how worn out is the ! key on your keyboard? grin

I wouldn't even have a inner tube without a rudder stir

Safe sex is important especially when STDs... Wait, OK R U D D E R S. U dont need a rudder to catch lots of fish. On the other hand, if you have 1, youll also have the option to pull it up and not use it. I think they are nice for drift fishing & crossing the lake on a windy day but definately not nessesary IMO.

I do a lot of river fishing and having a rudder saves a lot of paddling and having to use the paddle to guide the kayak when the current or wind is pushing me. Having a rudder also lets me fish more by not having to put my pole down to use the paddle to guide the kayak. I have used the rudder when landing larger fish by steering the kayak in the opposite direction the fish is going helping tire out the fish a little faster.

If you can afford a rudder, its great to have at your disposal. You may only need it 20 percent of the time, but when you do, you'll be glad you have it.

1st thing I missed the most on my Big Rig is the rudder hopefully that situation will be fixed this year, like most everyone else I believe if you ever have a rudder you won't be without one again.

Rudder is absolutely an asset! I don't care what size your kayak is it will allow you to position yourself the way you want a lot easier than not having one. I have the lure 13.5 and it made a HUGE difference in my ability to position myself correctly. I installed mine myself, if you need any help or have any questions on the instal let me know I can help you. Congrats on the Feelfree lure btw! It's a great kayak!
