I just moved to the area, I'm new to the forum, and could use some advice on how to locate some winter crappie at lake Alan Henry. I have been twice and just managed to catch a few small bass and break a brand new pole this summer. I'm not use to fishing lakes this narrow, this deep, and My boat is set up for spider rigging. This is the longest I've been with out fishing, the longest my boat has not been used in a long time. Any advice to help me get on some crappie this winter or any other time of the year would be greatly appreciated.i

Welcome to the forum. You won't find many posters on here about Alan Henry, but there are a few of us.

I'm afraid that spider rigging will be pretty tough on AH, there is a lot of brush submerged in there and most of the channels are deep and narrow. If you look at the mesquites and cedars above water level, there is just as much or more below the water. You could work the creek channels south of the dock, up Rocky Creek or Sand Creek but the crappie are probably deeper that that this time of year. The banks along these creeks usually will hold crappie in the spring.

There are lots of large submerged trees after you get past the no wake zone in Big Grape creek. I've caught some big crappie in there. It's usually pretty good fishing at night in there after it warms up some.

This time of year, I usually fish the crappie house. You can usually find crappie deep (2 or 3 turns off the bottom) and sometimes at different depths (20 to 30 feet). You will want to look at the weather before you go, because there's no cover there. The water is about 50' deep at the crappie house right now.

Good luck & let me know if I can help.

Fergy

Thanks for the advice. I was thinking I would probably have to give up the spider rigging. I plan on going in the next couple of weeks and I'll let you know how I do. Are there any other lakes near by that have good crappie fishing or has the golden Alger and drought got them all. I live in Snyder.

Lived out there a while.... Crappie Hous is best bet......off the bottom. I was also told crappies were hard to catch because of all of the cover underwater...There are some options....go to abilene/stamford or get a new mexico license and fish up there at santa rosa lake

Thanks, will the crappie still be on the bottom in 50 foot of water?

I nearly always catch fish near to bottom, but it's not unusual to catch them at 20 to 30 feet, where I guess the thermocline would be. I've even caught them on the bottom and at 10 feet on rods right next to each other. We usually catch a bunch of dinks, but they're fun too. The last time my buddy & I went (about 3 weeks ago) we took home about 18 fish between us.

I usually start one rod deep and a couple of others at varying depths to try to find out what the right depth for the day is and adjust them up or down until we find the fish.

You might want to look at Lake JB Thomas, which is southwest of Snyder. I know it picked up a lot of water last spring and I understand there has been some good fishing there. Lake Colorado City and Champion Creek reservoir are near Colorado City. I haven't fished any of these lakes in years, so I'm not much help there.

White River is north of Post, and you could probably troll there. You can also catch walleye here, which can sure tangle up a spider rig set up. White River is about 20 feet low, but I think you can still launch and troll around the island. They also have a crappie house, but I haven't done any good there this fall.

I may try AH Thursday afternoon or Friday if things work out.

That's good to know. I was thinking about going Friday but I promised my three year old a couple of hours ago that I would take him to my grandparents farm this weekend in Oklahoma. We are going to stop in Weatherford and do a little fishing Friday. Then deer hunting and roasting marshmallows the rest of the weekend. I think next weekend I will try to make it to ah Sunday or Monday if the weather is nice. I'll send you a pm before I go.

Went to AH for a few hours today. The fishing was a little slow, but I still ended up catching about 30 with 6 keepers, enough for at least two meals for the wife & me. The main bite was about 25' to 30' deep, tight lining minnows. I caught 1 fish deep. The weather was gorgeous. Even got to watch the B1's out of Abilene out training.

Remember that Ziska's store at the gate is running winter hours, so it's a good idea to call to see if they will be open if you want minnows.
