A lot of waters have been added in 5 years and lots have been re-surveyed in HD.
You can make that decision easily. The current maps can be viewed on the Navionics website's WEB APP. The maps are updated every day. What you see is what you would get when you update the map card that day. All new purchases include a year of freshest data updates.
There are two map layers on the site. Nautical Charts is Navionics data, and Sonar Charts is contour mapping created by processing sonar logs by unit owners. You can toggle between the map layers by clicking on the circle at the lower left of the panel. When the circle is grey, that is Nautical Charts, when it is blue, that is Sonar Charts.

Just get the card updated. Go to Navionics website and they can walk you through it.
A lot of new data has been added and not just by Navionics. A lot of people have uploaded as well. You are missing a lot

As Wayne said there has been a lot of new info added in the last 5 years with the new surveying and the sonar charts program. You can see on the Navionics WebApp.
What chip do you have now? Good possibility you can just buy the updates card for $99 and have the all of the new data for a little less money.

A 5 year old Hotmaps Platinum card may not be updateable. It may be too small.
The Hotmaps Premium card cannot be updated.
Navionics+ did not exist 5 years ago and neither did Sonar Charts.
Navionics Update is the only way to get new stuff without full price for a new Hotmaps Platinum, Hotmaps Premium or Navionics+ Preloaded map data.
Only Hotmaps Platinum and Navionics+ can have the Sonar Charts map layer. Navioncs Update is the discount version of Navionics+.

Actually Wayne, if it is an older Platinum that is not updatable, Navionics has been swapping out the old Platinum for a new, larger chip for the $99 update price so that the user can just update online in the future. A platinum card will not activate an updates card since they are updatable in the newer cards, so that is why they have been swapping them out with just a quick call to customer service. I was saying the updates chip in case he had a premium card which 5 years ago was a very popular card.

I have a Navionics HotMaps Platinum card V02.21. It's a 1GB card. According to the website, since my card is smaller than 2GB I need to ask my dealer for a Navionics Updates Card. Looking around online I see this card available for MSRP $99. If I buy this card locally (Academy, BassPro, etc), will I still have to pay an additional $99 when activating on the website?
I'd like to update my card but I'm a little confused on the best route to accomplish this. I'm also wondering if my card can even be used to activate the new Navionics Update Card. A negative review for the Update Card on the BassPro website said he had issues with trying to update using a HotMaps Platinum card.

Be careful. I got an update card and loaded the lakes around the Dfw area. Chose the LMS520 as my plotter and downloaded the data. However, the LMS520 won't read it. It's really blocky and no couture lines. Plugged the card into a newer hummingbird and it reads it fine. So I paid for the updated card and have to use my old one..... Bites

A negative review for the Update Card on the BassPro website said he had issues with trying to update using a HotMaps Platinum card. Ranger, First I will start with the best option for you having a Platinum card. I recommend you call Navionics customer service number and explain to them that you would like to update an older Platinum card and they will allow you to pay them the $99 updating fee(same fee if you had a newer card and wanted to update online) and they will send you a new Platinum card that will come with the 12months of free updates that you will be able to update online as often as you like. Once the 12 months runs out, you will be able to just pay the $99 fee online to get an additional 12 months of updates. It is not recommended to go the with the actual updates card for a Platinum for multiple reasons, but instead go the route above if its an old card or simple update online for a new platinum. On the fee part of the updates card, it is a one time fee that you only pay to purchase that card, as it comes with 12 months free of updates. It would only be after 1 year, if you wanted to continue updating that you would spend an another $99 for an additional 12 months. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Bites Grasshopper, do you have the newer 16GB updates card or the older 2GB one? Reason I ask is because the older units cannot handle that much data. Try going in and purging the card and try to load less info to see if that will fix the problem. The older units would only handle a 2GB card, so you have to be careful how much you try to load.

Thanks for the info Cory.
I called Navionics customer service today as suggested. Unfortunately I was informed that despite what the website says, "Benefit from our special 50% discount for Platinum+, HotMaps Platinum and Platinum owners.", my card does not qualify for the upgrade. Pretty disappointing to say the least especially looking at the list of other manufacturers cards that will work to activate the updates. My only option is to shell out another $200 for a new HotMaps Platinum chip. So much for customer loyality.

Did you ask them about them replacing the card for the $99 update fee? To the best of my knowledge they were still doing that, so that you could keep updating in the future.

I did. He said he couldn't do it since it was the 1GB card. I purchased the card for $199 from BassPro in December of 2009. He said that if it was the 2010 version they'd do the $99 upgrade.
