Rule #1
Never ever put grease on cables. Ever.
It will dry out and cake in the cable which binds it up. You can usually save it with penetrating oil and patience

Silicone, thin oil or lithium is your lubes of choice.

I would seriously look at Hydraulic steering. http://www.lowcostboatingstore.com/Steering_c_6.html

agree also about hydraulic steering, you can do it yourself pretty easily. i believe that my seastar was 750 new or something like that. only thing that requires a little maintenance overtime will be the seals, which you can get 4+ years with. cable steering (to me) is like driving a car without power steering. i think any boat with a 150+ hp motor should have it

this is what I do. I am on my second set in almost 30 years. The one with the biggest bend goes first. I have one that I need to replace soon. It is fine on plane but is tight at idle.

In most cases, cables last around 10 years. Lot of variables in that too IE. used in salt water or fresh, number of bends, radius of bends. But for the most part, 10 years and they are pooped out.

On my 96 200efi there is a 'O' ring in the tilt tube where the cable comes out.
also one in the free cable housing.
I have seen many motors without these .
water can get in and lube can get out .

I replace mine every year ,or so on my ten year old cables that still are smooth and free.
