Tonight at the Lake Fork Sportsman's Assoc meeting folks from the TPWD office in Tyler gave us a presentation of the Giant Salvinia (GS) that when first discovered covered 3 acres of water at the back ramp in Chaney Branch.

If this stuff gets out of that cove anymore than it already has done it could cause major problems for everyone that enjoys the lake. Early slides of the infestation showed how fast it was growing. This was in early November. Their guess is that it probably came in off a boat or boat trailer from someone that came to fish the Sealy tournament in late September from Louisiana .

And even though there was a sign in the business with a picture of the stuff there no one connected the dots that it was GS even while they were continually sweeping it off of their ramp. A guide finally recognized what it was and told a game warden.

So they put in a big long yellow boom to try and contain it until something else could be done. But then we had a couple of record rains which raised the lake and pulled the boom off the bank, boats were riding over the boom and some escaped that way, plus some may have been on the boats' transducers. They know for sure some got out and was found floating over by the dam and some may have gone down the dam into the Sabine River when they had the gates open.

And then they sprayed from an air boat which did turn some of it brown but some also survived. And then they sprayed again.

So we bass fisherman complain about the spraying while at the same time not doing due diligence when comes to making sure the GS and invasive zebra muscles and other species are not removed and washed off of our gear.

WE are the spreaders and WE need to take the responsibility for moving this stuff around.

I'm glad that Texas is taking a very proactive approach to keep it off Lake Fork. Here in Louisiana we did nothing but point fingers at each other. It has ruined some remarkable fisheries as a result.

If you see any, pick it up. Don't just let it float. Of course I know that you can't pick up 3 acres of it, but if you do run across a random piece of it floating along.... Get rid of it

We as fishermen have to take responsibility and take care of our fisheries. I am pretty sure they are making new ones for us to fish, and I for one would like my grandchildren to be able to enjoy bass fishing as much as I do. If someone has a picture or a link to the GS please post it so we know what to look for.

IMO wind and birds spread this way more than fisherman do.

All it takes is one seed or sprout of a seed to land in the water or fall off of a bird or even a water turkey throwing up one stain of the GS and it will take off.

There are other ways it gets into a lake also. With all the water that has came in from all the floods this year it could very easily come from a creek or another lake/pond up stream.

The only thing I know of that will kill the GS it is very hard freeze. When we had it really bad years ago mother nature killed it not TP&W. IMO

Just my opinion on the GS issue.

Had this stuff at tank at my moms place years ago, We made a big boom out of 2x8 and stock panel and scooped it out with a pitchfork, which was a waste because as someone posted when a big freeze came it was the end of that stuff. We have a little lake by us that has a lot of hyacinth that I am hoping for a good freeze to eradicate it. They spray " Rodeo' SP? on it from what we found out. I dont see why they waste time spraying it, boats spread some but mother nature via birds, animals and wind does too, as also stated earlier.

Spray or the other name for LMBV IMO. When we had the fish kills at Fork and Roberts years back all the hydrilla disappeared at the same time. Coincidence?? I think not. I am no scientist, this is just an opinion.

See you on the lake and have a great day!

This is below Caddo Lake dam after the water receded a few days ago. GS is some bad vegetation.

There is no question this stuff gets spread at boat ramps from trailers. I fish Caddo exclusively and there are times I am dropping my trailer into a mess of the stuff. Takes forever to pull it off but you know good and well there are chunks of it smashed between the bunk boards and the hull of the boat that you cant pull off.

Spraying to eradicate GS also eradicates the other cover in the lake and God knows what it does to the fish populations. Man always seems like he needs to 'piddle' with nature, to control it for their benefit or pleasure.
I say harvest it, serve it as the salad to go along with that asian carp filet! If you prefer surf and turf, Nutria, Asian Carp and salvinia salad. Your just reward for meddling.
Asian Carp. Nutria. Kudzu...yep. All introduced by man to control some other 'nuisance' animal or plant.
Maybe...just maybe Mother Nature is spreading salvinia to protect her prized possessions from humans wiping it out.
(Reference LMBV and milfoil above).

No ... according to TPWD there is no life, plant, animal, fish around this stuff ... it completely chokes out all life.

Advice? Wise men don't need it. Fools won't heed it.

This is the kind of attitude that makes the problem worse. Salvinia is a fact and the way it gets spread is well documented.
