just before Christmas I bought XI5 from Bass Pro. They offered a 10% discount if I signed up for their credit card and made the purchase. When got home took closer look at the charge slip. They had charged tax and then subtracted the discount from that amount. That is not a 10% discount off the retail price. They should have taken the discount off the retail price and then charged tax. Cost me about $12.00. I called and after hours of no answer or sitting on hold spoke to a manager type. They said they could not adjust because system was set up by corporate office. They did apply enough points to points account to offset overcharge.

Mathematically, they are one in the same...

100*.90=90; 90*1.0825=97.43
100*1.0825=108.25; 108.25*.90=97.43

What am I missing?

Or are you saying they did the discount on the retail price (Pre-tax) instead of the total when the discount was later applied?

Retail was $1489.99. Discount was $149.00. They taxed total retail of $1489.99 making total $1612.91 then subtracted $149.00 making total $1463.91.
Should have taken discount off the $1489.99 making retail price $1340.99 and taxed that amount. Tax would have been $110.63 instead of 122.92. Total should have been $1451.62 overcharged $12.29. First time I have ever seen a discount applied in that manner. It puts the $12.29 into their pocket. I considered calling the State Comptrollers office but they made it good in the end. At the least what they are doing is deceptive.

Well, not just deceptive but illegal if they are doing it that way. Their own site says that the 10% isn't eligible for taxes or shipping. Maybe the store just rung it up wrong or it was some other user error otherwise it looks like they are playing with tax money, charging it but getting to keep it.

Per my conversation with them, the way it is rung up is set by corporate. They have to ring it up that way.

You know unless there is a clear marking on the discount that says "off retail" then they did nothing wrong. Lots and lots of places discount the price after tax is applied. It's a chickensht way of saving a few bucks here or there. But unless the offer says "off of retail price" or something similar, it's totally legal.

Check with the rules established by the state comptroller. Corporate offices don't establish how the state collects taxes. In Texas you are traced on the total of the discounted price. If it is a coupon then you are taxed on the full price then deduct the coupon discount. So, it is actually illegal.

the point he is trying to make is they collected tax on 149 that they shouldn't have. the fact the the retail price dropped makes that portion non taxable unless the 149 was offered as a rebate.

They aren't real smart if they are trying to cheat you out of a few extra bucks because the way they did it the state is getting the extra 12 bucks.

The difference between your figures and theirs are really the same as you both did correct math . The difference comes in the small print where it says 15% discount is not to exceed 150 dollars so when your reach $150 that is all they will discount.Hope this helps
