I am thinking of doing my first ever Tuna Safari. I think I will be using the multi day charter in Port Aransas. I know that the fishing methods will be jigging, and casting crank baits. What kind of pound drag do I need to fish for tunas? What pound test line should I go with? Any extra information will be very helpful. Thank you!

For a partyboat you'll want to use heavier line - probably 80# braid for your jigging and casting reels. If you take a heavier setup for chunking (bait fishing), you ought to have 100-150# braid on it. If you were going on a private charter, you could use lighter line - I've landed 60#-80# yellowfin tuna on a Penn 500 with 30# mono, but those were loooooooong fights. Heavier braid helps you apply more pressure and get the fish in faster, which is important on a partyboat with alot of lines in the water.
Be sure to have spools of flourocarbon leader to match the reels, and some heavy-duty ball-bearing swivels - Sampo swivels are expensive, but they're worth their weight in gold for preventing line twist.

it's Texas (& Federal) game law, in the most general of explanation. no need to be a smartass about it.
to the OP- Zeek is right on. not knowing what gear you will be using, it's hard to give specific advice, but...... keep the fish in front of you after you're hooked up. it's called the "tuna shuffle". watch where & how your line intersects with others (over/under) whoever is catching the yellowfin, watch them & do what they do. buy a fighting belt or a big "cush-it" you'll be grateful. listen to your deckhand!!!!
post a report when you get back!

What kind of pound drag do I need to fish for tunas? What pound test line should I go with? Any extra information will be very helpful. Thank you! Drag depends on the pound test of your line but generally we use 1/3 of the line rating. 65# line is 20# drag and 80# is 25# drag 25# is max for me on sand-up tuna gear. We generally don't fish with less than 65# braid and use 60# to 80# Fluorocarbon leaders. Just remember you have to hold what ever pound of drag you set for the duration of the fight.. put 20# on the end of a broom stick and hold it out in front of you for 10 minutes... you'll get my drift. Get you a tuna fighting belt if your after Yellow Fins and a belly bumper for Black Fins. Metal rod butt gimbals are just brutal on your belly on a long tuna fight. Have fun

I currently have a Spinfisher V 8500 and a Fin-Nor 100LT. Spinfisher produces 35lb of drag and it has 65lb braid, and the Fin-nor has 45lb of drag and it has 80lb braid. Can I use this kind of gear for a tuna trip?
