This year I received a note from state saying I can't renew tag for my trailer unless I have an inspection. Looked at Texas website and mine does require according to law by 500 pounds.

Do I take it to the same places that inspect cars or boat dealer. My boat is kept at Fork.

I'm sure this has been discussed. I just missed it. Where would you go near Fork? Thanks

I run a 21' Legend with tandem trailer, I didn't need an inspection. What are you running?

A Ranger 520. I've never had to do it before. Got letter about renewal a couple of weeks ago. It expires end of Jan. it's a 2007 model that I've had for 3 years.

You take it to a regular car inspection. Most do trailers

Not all places that perform inspections will do a trailer. They must have the TL endorsement.
You can go to TxDOT website for a list of inspectors in your area.

This will be a on going thing. I took mine to certified scales and weighed the rig with no fuel and unloaded the boat. It weighed less than the legal limit although the record that the state had showed more. The lady at the Tax Assessors office was kind enough to change the weight so it does not have to be inspected.

Thanks for the info. Got it figured out. Evidently the law has required my trailer to be inspected for some time. The new law that went into effect in March 2015 requires proof of inspection via inspection station or inspection report before they will renew. My trailer is 5000 lbs with boat and anything over 4500 lbs requires inspection. I'll geturdone!

It's what your trailer is rated for I thought and not actually the weight of the boat could be wrong but another way the state is extorting money from you

You are correct, But...if you can show that the loaded normal load is less than 4501 lbs., it can be re registered at the lower value. The state is not extorting money from you. If they were, they would not allow re rating the trailer. They are trying to work with you.

This 'classification' stuff is so messed up. I have a Ranger Z520 on a tandem trailer. I got my renewal notice, and it was the same as it's ever been. 3 weeks later (Saturday) I get the renewal for my son's boat a - '99 519 DVS Ranger - on a new '14 Ranger trailer exactly the same trailer as mine! and I get the "it must be inspected" letter, rather than the standard renewal. Seriously, you can swap these trailers - other than the fender colors they are the same! They are both Rangertrail 5000 trailers. WTH! The boats are so close in size there couldn't any sizeable weight difference. I sent it in with the renewal but if I recall, mine had the weight of the trailer, and the capacity and they were something like 2200 lbs, and 2700, for a total under 5000. Unfortunately, they don't send that part of the renewal with the 'go get inspected' letter so I can't check the other one. Must total over 5000. Oh well - just a money grab. No body ever said this was a cheap hobby.

The magic number is 4500. What these people are doing is changing the load rating on their trailer. In essence, they are saying I will never carry more than that. The proof that is being provided is the weight of the boat and trailer fully loaded. If they are caught with more than 4500, their new rating, there are penalties.

It all depends on what the manufacturer put on the certificate of origin. Boat makes no difference, only the GVWR on the certificate.

When I had mine done it was entered on computer that automatically updated states info. They knew it had been done before I told them. Next time I will try to get mine rated according to boat weight because I will never use this trailer for anything except my boat. The place I took it didn't even know what they were supposed to check. The just looked at lights and answered questions on computer and passed it.

Does guys coming from out of state have to have this? If I'm not mistaken I'm also to have the drain plug pull out also?
