after a couple years coangling FLW Tour where most of the lakes filled with spots the first and easiest way to identify is the tooth patch on tongue. coloration and spots on side not blatantly obvious vs. Largemouth. the smaller mouth pretty obvious on the larger spots, but harder to compare smaller fish.

Game warden has told us that the location of the eye in relation to the back of the jaw is all they use to identify. Upper jaw does not extend pass the back of the eye. Was a good looking fish. Was at Ziska`s when fish was brought in to weigh. Scales hadn`t been re-certified so fish had to be taken to a place that they were.

Does anybody know how I can get in touch with the guy who caught the big spot? If so, please PM me. I would like to do a story about it. Thanks -- MW

I do believe TP&W dropped the tooth patch a few years ago as an identifying characteristic.

interesting. for me the small spots vs. small blacks not as obvious spots, mouth, or jaw line.

They say some spots do not have the tooth patch so its not 100% effective when trying to determine if its a spot or not.

The jaw test is your best bet.

I haven't been to that lake in years. I honestly think it's the best non-heated lake in winter in Texas. It has so many spots, the colder water actually makes it easier to catch them.

On EM there are a lot of largemouth with tooth patches as well

Not too sure if there is some cross breeding or evolution going on

Rayburn used to have big spots. Even the state record I believe at 5+ lbs. Now you are lucky to ever catch a 2lber. It is full of 8-12" spots. The fewer the better imo
