a couple years ago i was fishing at the neches river close to my house in lufkin texas when i hooked into my first gar. I was using a penn fierce 6000 with 20 lb line on an ugly stick using cut bluegill as bait. when i hooked into him he put up a great fight taking drag and alot of line. i didnt have a net or a gaff back then and got him to the bank. i didnt know how to get him out so i tugged on the line and the line broke. The thrill of catching it increased my curiosity on catching them. over the last couple years ive taken alot of nice longnose but this is my first big one ive landed on rod and reel. i was using a Penn 209 30 lb berkley big game behind a 2 0z no roll sinker on a 8/0 circle hook with cut bluegill
Nice catch man, do you have alligator gar in your area? The gator gar puts a hell of a fight too. Try using 60 or 80 lb braided line on that fierce and you will have less of a chance on those gars getting away. Again , Good catch!
ive never seen Gator Gar where im located however on the trinity river i have or in Rayburn and livingston. im gonna look at buying a big spool of braid as i have quite a few rods id like to fill up. ill use a heavy mono leader
