I will be on South Padre Island for the month of February, and I am into surf fishing. I am also game for anything.
So my question what gear to bring down. We are driving, so space is not a big issue, unless I bring the 12'ers.
I was thinking about a spinning rig and a casting rig, on 10' 2 pc rods, both set with #15 mono.
Chest waders and hook sets (rig to drum, blue fish and flute)to #8. #50 and #100 leaders, along some casting lures. Surf weights 1 to 6 oz..
Anything else? or am I thinking too large.
I am a fan of Red Drum and Sea Trout.
Bob

You should also bring a lite spin or bait cast 7' or so there should be some good wading for trout in bays. The big girls come out to play this time of year.

Thanks for the reply.
I will throw in a 7' bait caster.
I mostly fish fresh water, in fact I am waiting for the full freeze up, but there is nothing that beats a big tug in salt water.

Wait for a nice calm day in the surf and fish a paul brown corky very slow just like you would a jerk bait. When you feel the thump set the hook. Big trout can be caught in the surf that way. Sheepheads should be at the jetties. Use live shrimp on a small circle hook.

That is the Bay of Quinte Lake Ontario at sun rise , 7:30 am. My hut, on 12 inches of ice, @ -30'C. Fishing was great, 2 X 5 lbs and a 10 lb Walleye. Bob

Hog trout in the surf in the wind isn't bad off the Gulf, always trout in the bay. Try hitting the Convention Center flats for a good wade close to cuts.

Go to google maps and look for Martin Lake and for the area that drains into the Brownsville ship channel. There are some areas that you can fish from the bank but works best if you have a kayak. There is a boat launch there and it right off of the highway that goes to Brownsville from Port Isabel. I fished there several times last January with fly rod and caught several reds and trout.

Well I have been here for a week, only one Pompano in the surf, to show for it. I saw lots of Whiting and heard of a couple of small Sharks, but that is it.
Now there we have recovered from our "drive", I will start trying other spots.
The wind is high today, and so is the surf, so I think it is jetty time.
What is the best time to fish the jetty, high or low tide, slack or changing tides?
I brought light tackle and some heavy stuff, but I have been warned that the jetty is hard on tackle.
Fishing in 80'F is better then -20 'F as long as you catch fish.

Hey bob. Fish the jetty on a moving tide. Sheaphead should be out there. We are getting on big schools of black drum in the bay. Making for very fun fishing.

Thanks for the reply,
Now that the fog and surf have died down a bit I will fish on the gulf side in the surf today.
The bay black drum sound inviting, maybe next week. I did go down to port Mansfield to see the offshore boats returning, but it was too rough for them to go out, so not much to see.
3 more weeks of this, I can't bear it, lol

Let me know if your looking for a charter. My winter rates run for the next two weeks and I can make it pretty affordable for one person.
