I live in and fish the llano and have been fishing the trout. They are getting pretty picky but are feeding heavy on the surface. Went sat and caught several but just one or two a run. Went home found the smallest hooks I had( I'm a bass guy) they are 16 or 18 I think maybe smaller tied 4 and caught a good many , but the flies the are eating are really really small. Does anyone here know the hatches in central tx? They look brown to black and again are very small. The ones I tied this morning looked good but had trouble keeping them on top and were twice as big as the ones they were keyed in on. Thanks

I cannot offer any entomology on the hatch, A&M or GRTU might. But if they are keying on something small and brownish-blackish, why not get the teeniest hooks, perhaps even down to #20, and tie some super simple midge patterns of various sorts? The impression might do the trick. Offered as my humble suggestion.

Ya that's what I did I ordered some no. 20 and 22 hooks. I was just curious if they were mayflies or what they were.

try a small 1/80 jig fly on the hatchery trout . I've caught them on the jig fly tied in crawfish colors when they wouldn't hit anything else. I'm not an expert but the little jig flies will catch them if they're biting anything. The fly is sometimes called a near deer on this site.-p-

Ya I tied a handful of those, they worked really good until 2 weeks ago. Then they started hitting bead head prince nymphs. Now they are gorging on the small mayflies or bwo's whatever they are. My hooks should be in tomorrow. I caught around twenty Monday but if I can get closer to the size they are feeding on it should be way better.

I made some of these they worked really good at first.

Sounds like you are getting into midges. Google the Krystal Flash Emerger and the Yong Special. Also, you can apply floatant to your leader except the last few inches to keep your fly "in the film".It's usually best to feed rising fish from downstream with a long leader avoiding any drag by piling up the leader with a stop cast...lots of other names for this technique.

Have you tried tying a black mosquito on a #22-24 hook? Black body (thread) and black dyed hackle and short wings have worked well when I couldn't get things going. Dope it up good and see what happens. Some will call it a midge but it always looks like a black mosquito to me.

I'm on other forums that deal with the old turbo powered Buicks.;)

Thanks for all the advice. My hooks came in and I tied several last night but it was too windy and pretty cold today. I'll post some pics of the flies and how they worked. Thanks again
