I have been reading some posts on this forum about the flooded cover and getting out fishing shallow now. While I could understand this during warmer times of the year my personal experience tells me to focus more on deep water, rip rap and points during the winter. I like to beat the bank and fish cover but again I dont feel confident in this strategy in a cold weather environment.

Curious what insight, success, examples you anglers might be able to provide me for fishing shallow now with the water up.

***I was on the lake Sunday- scenario was 1.5 ft high, flooded grass, 50 water temp, sunny and 1 foot visibility.***

Thanks!

Coming from up north, I can actually toss in a couple cents.

I peg my weights so that the bait doesn't swing away from cover. Fish will normally be tight to the bank on cover or holding on their normal spots. Stained water will warm faster so I would focus on rock before wood but that is just me. I would try a silent dark bait first, then add beads or rattles.

I assure you, if you knew where the best shallow water spot on your lake is, the fish would be there daily. Now in the Winter months many of them that travel there everyday route to the shallows will fulfill their feeding habit before reaching the bank. They stop on several ambush points along the way to feed. Big Bass will stay on these ambush spots longer during the Winter to conserve energy if possible.

Some Bass will not be as successful, so they will continue their route into the shallows. We are talking about a very short distance from their comfort zone to the bank; but yet it is usually a flat joining a creek swing. Coming out of the creek where the water is 10 to 15 deep the flat immediately jumps to 5 ft. and the bank is only a few yards away. Each Big Bass has her stops along the route to the shallows. She will be on the same stumps or bushes everyday.

The creek will be closer to one bank than the other. They are not always on the short distance side to the bank. More often they are on the side of the creek with a little more distance to the bank. A longer flat gives them more stumps and bushes to ambush from on the way to the bank. I always fish the side that the wind is blowing on so the warmer water is being pushed to that bank.

Each person you work with holds some promise to your future success.

I will typically use a bait that has movement along with dark colors. In muddy water they are not going to see it very well anyway so you need to show them a bit. For example instead of a standard craw put a Rage Craw on when flipping in there. Just something that gives off a little more vibration. Fishing slow wont change though.
