Light winds out of the north @ 5 to 10 mph.
Water temp 62 to 64
Heavy overcast skies.
Lake is full
Water color was a little off
The parking lot was full of boat trailers *** Looked like possibly a tournament was going on.

Well this is a first, we arrived somewhat early, around 10:30am. First stop, we caught some fish with a top water bait.. Moved on around into some deeper water and picked up a few on plastic in the timber. The fish we caught out deeper were in the one and half to two pound range which wasnt good enough, so let the searches begin. Went to another spot and started throwing top water again, picked up a few in the three pound range, but nothing real consistent, one here and one there, so I moved again. Finally I got us on some good top water action, three and four pound fish. Now that I have them somewhat dialed in, we fished a few more areas similar to this one and kept on catching three to four pound fish the rest of the day. This is not an accurate count due to the fact that I didnt use my counter, but we boated 30 fish at the low end for sure, but possibly 45 in all. But to keep from telling a tall tell fishermens story, lets just keep it at 30 fish to be on the safe side. Never the less, it was another awesome day of hooking up with some quality fish. I know my partner and I had a blast, so this trip was a great accomplishment, plus I got my fish addiction fix for the week. We had a good ten to fifteen fish come unbutton on us. I think we may have had our drags set to tight and was pulling them lose. I know after I backed mine off a little, I didnt lose anymore. But we were fishing around some structure when this happened, so you had to keep it somewhat tight in order to keep the fish under control.

Top water action is the best. I sure get a kick out of it. We had a few that blew up on our baits right at the boat. That will make you jump every time, I don't care who you are.
I can not wait to go do this again.

Replaced the front and back hooks on my top water baits, now I'm ready to go hit em hard again.

I agree, that was just down right rude. The guy never gets on fishing forums, so I didn't step on any toes, but still that wasn't the way you should post a fishing report. It sounds more like a selfish ME me me me thing, and it was wrong. So any derogatory statement towards this selfish behavior is well deserved and I will be the first to agree. I have been posting fishing reports for fifteen years and this type of recognition was the first. Sorry, now I want to go change this. In fact, I will as soon as I hit submit on this one.

The post must be too old to edit, it will not allow me to do so. But thanks for the reply, I defiantly needed to be called out on that one.

"Well this is a first, we arrived somewhat early, around 10:30am."

I'm just curious, what time is "normal" if 10:30 AM is considered EARLY? roflmao

I hated to make a comment on that one...lol. I've always considered 10:30 am to be late.

Normal time for me is somewhere around noon theses days. On this lake, I use to hit it early in the morning and fish till dark or on into the next morning, but the best bite has always been in the later part of the day for me, so I figure why get there early and fish hard with little results to show for my efforts. Personally, I hate the fishing part of this sport, but live for the catching end of it. The morning bite will only last for a few hours, leaving an angler very little time to locate the best chew and then just go dead, but around 1 or 2 pm the bite is beginning to pick back up. Somewhere between 3 to dark is the best time. Fish are beginning to move out of the deeper water and start staging for the late afternoon and night foraging areas up in shallower water again. Dont take my word on this; this is just something I have experienced over the past fifteen years while fishing this lake and taking notes. And maybe it has something to do with my style of fishing that has better results during this afternoon time frame as well, I dont know. I have fifteen years of information contained in my log books that pretty well tell the story well enough for me to stand behind it and fish by it though. I find this to be true when I am fishing Bastrop Lake as well due to my log. So, now you know why I prefer to arrive later in the day, the catch rate seems to be much higher in the afternoons for my style of fishing. Oh and the air temp has warmed up some by then as well. I tell you what, Im beginning to get on up in age where the weather and time I put on the water has become a factor, so while Im out there, I have got to get on and stay on a good bite in order to have what I call a productive trip.

fishytx, Sounds like you got them Fayette bass dialed in! A buddy and I used to make the 3 hour drive to Fayette every Feb. or March. What a great lake!

You mentioned getting up in age, that's the way I am and sometimes I'll launch mid day or late morning. Still enjoy getting out there, just not as mad at them bass as I used to be...lol. Thanks for the great reports!

I have one buddy who still thinks you have to get there before the sun comes up, but those days are long gone for me. Fishing for the fun of it, heck no, late start. Fishing in a tournament, count me in and I'll even bring some breakfast we can eat before we take off. Hehehehe

Thanks for the explanation of your experience-based timing for fishing that lake.
