Where is the closest water, from southeast TX, that has smallmouth?

Also, where would a premier destination be for a longer smallmouth kayak fishing trip, within a one-day drive from SE TX?
Arkansas? Oklahoma?

Centex area, Canyon Lake or Belton? Blanco river if in kayak. It's a drive but I hear the Devils river is great.

Devils is on the list, but not real soon.

Went to Beavers Bend many years ago, before kayaks, and trout fished in rented canoes. I'd like to go back and try the lake for some smallmouth. Has the area recovered well from the flooding?

Lake Belton in Temple, TX has a very good population of S/M in the 2-3 lb. range.

Curious, do you launch the kayak from Blanco state park? Upstream or downstream?

The Buffalo in Arkansas is a great float and loaded with smallest!!! Prolly closer to you than the Devils. Devils is great and also loaded with fish but very regulated and lots of yak dragging.

Texas Top 50 Smallmouth Bass

Ron Gardner owns 10 of the top 50, most caught back in the 1990's on Lake Whitney (mostly night fishing for them). Only two records were set after the year 2000. The string of lakes on the Colorado River west of Austin has smallmouth populations.
