I have a Dual Pro Professional Series 4 bank charger that came stock on my Triton. The previous owner mentioned that he replaced the cranking battery under warranty when he had the boat, I replaced one last year and now the new one is dying. The LED's light up as if the charger is working perfectly and the charger is always plugged in when the boat is in storage. I turn off the master switch to the batteries as well so there isn't a current draw when the charger is on.

When the boat sits in storage for an extended period of time (7-10 days), the cranking battery struggles to even turn the starter. Once the engine starts and runs for a while, I don't have a problem. My voltage output from my Merc shows 14.1-14.4 volts when the engine is running.

Anyone have any suggestions or run into similar problems? Any help is appreciated.

Sounds like your charger isn't staging to float mode. I would think that it is getting over charged, leading to premature failure. Is there a setting for battery type? Can you put it on a timer?

The charger goes into maintenance mode once the batteries are charged. All 4 banks show maintenance mode after going through the initial charging process.

How old is the battery. Take it in to see if it's holding a charge. May show good until a load is on it. CCA on battery? Size of motor?

I had the same problem a few years ago. Lights showed it was working, just no juice to the battery. The guy at dual pro customer service asked me to change the fuses and try it before I removed it and sent it in. I only had issues with the cranking battery not charging, but replaced all the fuses. Problem was solved. Give that a try, it saved me a lot of time.

Listen, these dual pro's are notorious for going bad. I've been through probably 3 in a 12 month period. Same Exact LED issues. If the current one dies, I'll go with Minn Kota in the future.

Hmmmm. Could it be a dirty terminal on the motor side of the cable? Have you verified that the battery is charged by using a DMM? Have you verified the charger is charging while using a DMM in amp mode?

I can't count how many "bad batteries" and "bad chargers" I've diagnosed for customers. It's usually a bad connection somewhere else besides the "obvious"'that is causing the issues. Are the fuses good?

Now, you say you can crank the motor and after that point the battery is charged enough to work the rest of the day. So we know that the charging system in the motor is ok. The battery is pretty new, so it is less likely to be "bad". However, if the battery has been allowed to drain below 10'volts or so a few times, it really could be ruined. Again.

I'd check things with a DMM before throwing good money after bad. You need to know what is wrong before you start wasting money.

Try switching charging leads between batteries and see if the charger still has the same issue with the same battery. If the problem moves with the cables swapped around, it's the charger. If the problem is still the same with the cranking battery, it either a sulfated battery or a bad connection somewhere.

Battery is only 6 months old. CCA should be fine for the size of the motor. It cranks it with ease when the battery has a charge.

Thanks everyone! I'll give 'em a call and will definitely look into the things mentioned above. Electrical is not my forte.
