So my girlfriend (WHO I LOVE IN CASE SHE READS THIS) got me a 3 month subscription to something called mystery tackle box wherein i apparently receive a box of lures that i did not pick out once a month for the next three months...

anyone have any experience with this? i am appreciative, blah, blah, blah, but just wondering if i should politely "suggest" to make sure that the subscription is only three months...

MTB started out pretty good for me, got a few nice boxes early. Then they started focusing too much on theme boxes and major sponsors. I feel I got the short end of several months; they have a couple of boxes that get randomly divided and inevitably I got the one that was further from my style of fishing, and the baits we use in Texas.

I hated the fact that they only gave partial bags of plastics, and tried to bump up their stated value as if they where full (they eventually changed this to some degree). In theory, you 'can' get really good value, or stuff we'll never use in Texas.

Enjoy it for the surprise every three months, and move on. There are several of these out there. I am taking LunkerBox right now. Give us a review when you get them, and let us know what kind of baits they are pushing out now!

I couldn't agree more with David on this honestly they sent out frogs for December fishing when it was 39 outside. I enjoyed the few months I received the boxes but after looking at the amount of junk I had opened in the boxes I would rather just go buy the stuff I use at bass pro. I really disliked that they sent a half of bag of worms to me an the price said a value of 4.99 lol I don't remember zoom charging that ever for worms more the less a bag half full for that. It's honestly almost like going to the casino you win some and lose some.

Hey Guys,
Thanks for the feedback on your experience with our service. We just wanted to clarify a few points based on the feedback posted here:

- We have only done 1 themed box in the past, which was an all-Berkley box that had about $25 worth of Berkley items. We did that box about a year ago and we have not done one since based on the mixed feedback we received.

- The regular MTB box has sample packs of plastics because the point of our service is try try out new stuff and to have a chance to experience new baits. By doing 2-3 sample packs of plastics vs 1-2 full packs, our subscribers end up getting more baits to try every month. Even after factoring the value of the samples, our boxes are worth about $25 MSRP. Our new MTB Pro box does have full packs of plastics and has about $45 MSRP in it.

- We redesigned our product information cards about 4 months ago to make the product pricing very clear. We show the pro-rated value of the sample packs when we include samples packs, as you can see here: http://screencast.com/t/LbSORwxIk The old card still made clear the fact that we sent sample packs by showing the quantity of items we sent vs what was in the full pack, but we made it even more clear with the new card based on customer feedback.

- We try and make boxes seasonal as often as possible, but seasons vary throughout the country and not every month is 100% perfect. But we focus on partnering with quality brands that make great products so our subscribers will at least be excited to use an item soon if it's not perfect for that month. For example the frog in the December MTB Pro box was a LiveTarget worth about $10, but there was still over $35 of other products in that box and the pro box only costs $24.99. (here was the full fox: http://mysterytacklebox.com/boxes/pro8)

We are always looking to improve our service and we have a number of great things in store for 2016, including a lot of exciting new partnerships with brands like Lucky Craft and many others.

Thanks again for the feedback.

It better be good! My wife got me a one year subscription for Christmas and she'll be upset if it's not money well spent. And I can guarantee it'll be the last one she ever gets if it disappoints.

It would be a great gift. Not so much if you are paying for it. David hit it right on the head.

I tried it and a few others for a few months and they were okay but I ultimately decided I was too much of a control freak to pay to have someone else pick my baits for me.

I am not sure if they still do but they used to do a promo code where you could get the first box for 5 bucks ( I didn't find out about this until I signed up for 3 months unfortunately) But if that code is still active It doesn't hurt to try it. Everyone is different

Seems like a good buy for the beginning angler to fill up a tackle box.

I would like to be able to tell you but it's a little hard to when you only get 3 boxes and nothing else. My friend gave that to my son last Christmas and it was for a year and he received 3 boxes and it just stopped from there. Supposedly he called several times and still didn't get it resolved. However, he gave me the Earnhardt Outdoors Tackle Grab and it was pretty good and I actually received one every month like clockwork.

I used to be a customer of theirs. Also tried LTB and Tackle Grab. If I were to go back it would be to the new MTB "Pro" I think it is.

I actually thought about asking for a year's subscription for my Birthday coming up in Feb.

Got my first box the other day - overall very pleased - one small problem that is being addressed - lots of stuff i am looking forward to trying and one lure i am very excited about because i would not have bought otherwise and so far it works great - not sure if i am allowed to say what it is...

in any event, based on first box received i am saying thumbs up for a gift from someone who does not know what to buy an avid fisherman or for someone who is just starting out - i really mean that as a positive review!!

Overall I've been happy with Mystery Tackle Box and also with Lucky Tackle Box. I'm subscribed to the inshore versions of both.

The only thing I have a small problem with is that it seems they sometimes don't get enough inshore baits to make a box, so they put in a bass bait. I'm fully aware that a lot of bass baits will work for inshore (and vice versa), but it's supposed to be an inshore-specific box. This last month one of them (I can't remember which) came with a bass hardbait that said it was for bass right on the package, and the company's website says it's a freshwater bait. I wonder about the hardware and hooks standing up to saltwater. But it is a good saltwater color and would probably be great throwing by the jetties for redfish, so it's not enough of a problem to make me reconsider the subscription.
