Under normal seasonal conditions, if there is any such thing, when do the sunnies get active and start biting well? I figure it is sometime between late March and late April, but can't remember. Already looking forward to spring, hate winter!

The time depends on the water temperature. When the water warms to 68 degrees the Bluegill start to move in. In North Texas that is usually late April.

Here is the South Central/Hill Country area sunfish get very active during late March all the way until late November as a rule. I have caught a lot of BIG Redear during the colder months of late December through February. "Smithaven" got it right. 68 degree water will usually start turning em on!

Smithaven and Banker, thanks for the replies. Need to save 68 degrees in my old brain as the magic number. Happy New Year to you and all others on the forum.

I will spend a lot of time fishing for bluegill in ponds in the winter. If you get 3 good days of warm temperatures you can usually go out an have a good afternoon of fishing. A lot of these very shallow ponds will warm up enough to get the fish biting good. Also, the ponds usually get going a couple weeks before the larger water bodies in the Spring. I had some of my best days of the year by mid March this year.
I usually abandon the top water popper and fish with heavier sinking flies in the winter. A very slow swim through the weeds will often produce trophy fish from ponds in the winter as well. I try every pond I can. I've caught my biggest fish out of the most unlikely ponds you could imagine.

Good information Jamie. I also have a couple of good Bluegill Ponds I fish year around. During the winter warm spells the Gills get pretty active and are on the move. Caught some very nice pond gills over the winter months during warm spells.

Seems a lot of fish start getting active in March. During the dog days of summer fish seem to get lazy and starting getting active again in October! Just my two cents.

Late March up until early December or when ever the first major cold front arrives.
