I've heard that line rating is really not that big of a deal, but could I use 14 pound line on a 4-12 pound rod and get away with it? It's a medium rod, by the way.

What are you gona be targeting with this setup?

Line rating is just a suggestion. Could fish that rod with 4-65 braid. Lure Weight and finding that rods "sweet spot" ideal weight is more important. My 2cents

I believe that the reel line rating is for monofilament. If you are using braid then the line rating is way off. 30 lb braid is the thickness of 8 lb monofilament or so.

Line weight is completely your choice/taste. You can compensate for line weight(strength) vrs rod weight with your drag. Suggested lure weight on the rod is a little more critical. While just a "suggestion" it still gives you an idea of roughly what the rod will cast efficiently. A lure too heavy will "overload" the rod and if the lure is to light(especially for the tip) you will not be able to cast the lure very well. All are simply suggestions though and your individual tastes are what matters.

The line wt/lure wt is just a suggestion to acheive optimum casting performance. You can use any line/lure wt that you want and it won't hurt anything.

I use 30# Fins Windtamer(8 lb. Dia.) and tie on a 6# hi-Vis leader 4' long for Crappie on my Chronarch and can cast an 1/8 oz jig head fairly well for dock chasing on a AllStar med /light 6'6 . Works well and I can change leader size to 20# Big Game for Specs inshore. . Works for Me......

I still have a river rod that I made back in the early 90's. We used to cut off old rods where the handle meets the blank and an inch or two off the tip. I have caught 6 pound fish on them with 20 lb mono. Very effective for short distance accuracy. If you are going river fishing enjoy 👍
