looking for a source for glass or plastic dumbbell/ hourglass shaped eyes. I want the eye for appearance and water disturbance, with out a lot of weight. I have use chain bead eyes, but looking for something with little more eye appearance. The doll eyes are good, but time consuming to get them directly across from each other.

I don't think I've ever seen a dumbbell shaped glass eyes for sell, but individual eyes are easy enough to make.

Melt the end of a piece of monofilament with a lighter to form a "ball" on the end of the mono, then slide a glass bead onto the mono. The "ball" of mono keeps the bead from falling off.

I've always just made one of these "eyes" for each side and tied them in separately, but you could put two beads on one piece of mono and then melt both ends of the mono to create a homemade "glass and mono barbell eye".

You end up with eyes that look like this:




Plastic bead chain is available from most fly tying suppliers if you'd rather use plastic eyes.

Get some plastic dumbbell eyes. Dip them in white or yellow (or whatever color you like) paint, and let them dry. Use a toothpick to put a black paint pupil on each end of it. When that dries coat it with Sally's and yer done!
