I was on Welsh for the first time this weekend and started to get interference, vertical lines, on my graph when I engaged the trolling motor. I've never had this happen before and I've had my boat for two years. I've also never been on a power plant lake when they were generating power. Has anybody had this issue before? I have an HDS 9 touch.

What I'm fixing to say is going to sound weird, and I have no explanation for it.

Early in the morning, my Lowrance graphs will read "dirtier" than up on later in the day. It almost looks like the water is very heavy with sediment causing it to show lots of noise. Also, I have the same problem you do with interference with the trolling motor on the graph on the bow. At times it is worse than others. I never get vertical lines on it, but there are times where it will look like solid grass from the bottom to the top when you engage the trolling motor. Sometimes, the TM doesn't effect it at all. I guess it could possibly have something to do with humidity, full charge on TM batteries or maybe just the way the stars line up.

What I'm saying is - don't let it bother you until you get on another lake in other conditions. It could quite possibly be the environment you were in.

So you can tell I understand about as much with the TM and graph interference as I do with the behavior of bass. hmmm

It's never happened on other lakes, and as I mentioned I've never been on a lake they were generating power. There were times when the temp was reading -3.7. I was thinking it was from the power plant. No idea though confused

Water conditions, current, sediment & weather could be factors, but the fact that boilers, turbines, and generators were operational is not a factor. No electrical field of any concern to your electronics will extend far enough from the armature of a generator in a plant. If it did, workers at the plant would have electromagnetic radiation burns.

It is feasible that some EMI filter capacitor could have failed in the TM, allowing the new observation. I don't know details of your motor design, so just something possible, not saying your TM is broken. More observations are needed to deduce why the change has occurred.

How deep of water were you in when this was happening?

It was happening in deeper water. 15+ depth.

Were you running a graph at the console at the same time you were running the graph at the bow? If so, turn the graph off at the console and see if the interference stops. Mine was doing the same thing and what was happening is the cones from the transducer are crossing each other at a certain depth. So the bow graph is picking up noise off the transducer off the back of the boat, if that makes sense.

Good point, stratos. That is definitely a possibility. Any operating transducer for another unit is random noise to a unit you are using and will interfere.

I will comment that for "shutting down" a second unit, it may be possible to put that unit in "sleep" mode rather than turn it off - depending on brand/model. This saves the aggravation of having to wait for software to boot when you restart such a unit. Taking most units out of sleep mode (when available) gets the unit in a usable state almost instantly. You'll also conserve battery power by doing this. (I've even wired my LSS box so that I can kill power to it when I don't need it even if an HDS wake-up signal is on.)

You aren't the only one out there using two graphs. Not saying this isn't the issue, but there has to be an easier fix than to turning your graph to sleep mode every time you stop. Not to mention, it's pretty aggravating to a partner in the back seat not being able to see a graph.

Your trolling motor is wearing out. It's that simple.

I've had this exact same thing happen but its never constant. Some days when I step on the trolling motor it adds the interference to the bow graph...other days it doesn't. It's never been a big deal so I've never really dug into what the issue is.

You just may need to make adjustments to your surface clarity and noise rejection options depending on conditions for that particular day. This is all relative to weather and lake conditions. This may also vary on the the same day and lake but on different parts of the lake. Wind, current and water clarity will all be factors. I always turn mine off and adjust from low to high accordingly.

You have 2 frequencies to choose from. Put the console on one & bow on the other. I keep my bow on the higher frequency to get as much detail while I'm up there. You can relay to partner when you see details he may not be seeing. (I.E.: stump with arches beside them, fine details). That way front unit is not reading signals from back unit & vice versa. It works for me.

Was another boat close by. If so you can also get interference from that boats graph on yours.
