I am getting a skeeter. what are the main things you guys look for in choosing a new boat. Color, electronics, length, or motor size. dual console or single console?

Max hp for the boat
A color that will resale easily,

20 foot minimum
Not underpowered, at least a 225 for a 20 foot boat
Double vs. single console not really important
Don't get a crazy color like purple, green or yellow, they struggle to re-sale

I've been searching for a while too. The main thing I look for is almost anything but a skeeter.

(this is mostly assuming youre buying something new)
Double console if you fish a lot with other people, (they will love you for not getting them wet) single if you fish alone mostly
check for storage, good latches, something that is easy to open. Ride in one before you purchase one (and drive if you can)
Only look at what you actually want, even if you cant afford it, youre better off getting something you want thats more expensive than settling for something you dont want go big or go home, so you dont have to upgrade stuff later

my problem is I love the new green option fx21 le. I love the color but I am concerned about the long term. And the price I have gotten from two dealers is 73000 and 75000. I have found a demo fx21 that is a more neutral color and has 14 hrs on it with all garmin electronics for 53000 with dual power poles .

If you're dead set on buying a Skeeter the best advice anyone can give you is to buy either the older Yamaha OX66 fuel injected motor or a SHO that was manufactured after May of 2013. If you buy an HPDI (series 1 or series 2, doesn't matter) or a SHO made before May 2013 then you're buying a ticking time bomb. Many mechanics will tell you that it's not a matter of if it blows up but when.

I know there will be several owners of HPDI that chime in and say they haven't had any trouble with theirs, but like I said, it's just a matter of time. There's a reason they quit making them.

The OX66 is Yamaha's fuel injected motor before the HPDI and is regarded by many as one of the very best motors ever made. Find a clean one with low hours and you'll find a gem.

Most of the boats I've been buying have had Mercury motors on them and I've (unfortunately) been having to stay away from the used Skeeter market because I don't want to sell someone a motor that will more than likely blow the power head before long. I used to buy a ton of Skeeters and Tritons. Now I'm buying almost exclusively Tritons. I love the ride of a TR21 in rough water. You might wanna consider a TR21 or TR20 with a Merc.

Just my $0.02, but it comes from a lot of experience, research, and talking to marine mechanics.

If you want to talk to one of the best mechanics in the state, call Frank with Jordan's marine in Vidor, TX. Ask him how many HPDI motors he has seen blow up compared to others.

A Mercury can blow up too. They all can. However, the numbers are far more in favor of Mercury.

If I can help or give any advice feel free to send me a PM and I'll help any way I can. I've bought and sold almost 70 boats since 2008. I never buy one without checking compression. That's the most important thing you can do. Don't even consider buying one without a compression check. If you can't do it yourself then pay a mechanic a few bucks. It could save you thousands by avoiding a bad mistake.

I hated my HPDI, constant maintenance. Next boat will have a Mercury, unless i hear a ton more positive things about the SHO. Seems like every used boat that has a SHO, has a "new"powerhead..

Also, in spite of what others have said, you are wise to buy a Skeeter in this area. Texas is Skeeter country, they re-sale very well here when you get ready to sell. It always amazes me the brands that struggle to sell used, they shouldn't because they're quality brands, but they do.

I think you can get a new one considerably cheaper. I'm thinking I have seen one for 66-68,000. Check with Monte at Fun N Sun. 817-280-0303

He helped me find a used one, and it's been great. He might know about one that is for sale that he's serviced over the years. I found a gem through him.

You might consider Triton, too. Very nice and well made. 150hp Merc and up.

Your spending 75000 on a bass boat... If you can afford a 75000 dollar bass boat I would say you don't have many problems.... Green, blue, yellow, pink, or orange... Doesn't matter just buy one YOU like! Wouldn't worry about the rest.
