My tilt and trim unit keeps loosing fluid and leaking. I am looking at replacing all the o rings etc in the tilt and trim, Has anyone ever done this by themselves. I have researched and you tubed it but looking at ordering parts and trying it myself.

Any pointers before I try?

I did the same a while ago. You will need a "Spanner Wrench" to remove the cylinder glands (the caps that the cylinder rods come through)Do not try to remove those caps without a proper fitting spanner wrench. They are made of Aluminum and real easy to screw them up trying to remove them without the correct tool. I made a spanner from an old 4.5" angle grinder nut removal spanner -had to resize it though.
Other than that - just make sure everything is CLEAN before reassembly - AND - Lubricate (grease) all the new O-rings and rubber parts. Pretty easy.

Good Luck because I have seen several of these never work again after the owner changed the tilt seals.

Thank you. I confirmed that the spanner wrench is from a grinder fits the tilt perfectly , but it doesn't fit the the trim caps. going to look for one tomorrow for the trim tabs.

Anyone every done the tilt.? I think that is where mine is leaking.

I am going to to go the Yamaha dealer in the morning and get parts if they have them in stock or I am going to order them to try and overnight so I can do it this weekend.

Gary I am going to give it a try. I haven't had a whole lot of experience with hydraulics but I am willing to take risk. It doesn't seem that hard but I think I can do it.

The trim seals are more likely to leak but I have had to replace the seal on the tilt ram too. Problem with the tilt is having to take the piston off of the shaft to remove the seal cap. Good Luck

I have done mine on my 2001 vmax 200. It's not too hard, but can be a chore on the tilt ram. The trim rams may have a mushroomed edge on the ends. This will need to be removed to prevent damage of the new seals.

Thanks for the help. I finished the repair at least for now. I am heading to the lake tomorrow. Time will tell. Worst case I know how to do it and I will order new new trim rods and caps. I would bet that's what any shop would of done.

My tabs were mushroomed for on the ends, I took them and grinded them with a blade sharpener and it worked. I made a spanner wrench out of a dewalt spanner wrench. And I did a number on the caps. I guess I would recommend the Yamaha wrench , but I honesty don't know if would of helped in my situation. The were on there so tight, I ended up beating them off with a punch. I had a pipe on the spanner wrench and everything and I am pretty strong and I could not get them to budge.. The tilt ram was actually the easiest part of the whole process. The cap came off easy and the whole assembled dropped off rather easy. Thes seals are a pain to get into the center of the caps but everything was was pretty straight forward.

If anyone has a question let me know and I will try and it walk them through the process.
