After some trials and a few epic failures, a black crappie paint schedule came together and has been documented for future reference.

I used a Paasche Vision airbrush for this pattern. Its a nice tool with a MAC valve for adjusting the air to paint ratio and has a smooth trigger action.

I used Createx paints with Illustration base and Wicked paints with High Performance reducer. Normally I only use Createx or Wicked and dont mix the two brands on any one pattern. In this case I didnt have all the colors in either brand so the use of both was necessary.

The blanks are LC 1.5 style with DRS rattles. They were dipped in a sealer before painting. The bills are wrapped with plain painters tape. Any glue residue left on the bills can be removed after the clear coat by using a little Goo-Be-Gone on a paper towel. Here they are after being base coated with Opaque white.
Each coat is flash dried with a hair dryer before another is added. Here the blanks have been shaded with several colors from upper back to belly. This gives the lure the shimmer of colors that you see on a Crappie. Upper head and back green with turquoise and silver overtones; Sides lighter with randomly scattered dark splotches; lower gill plate and abdomen whitish.

The dark splotches can be made with a stencil like the one here or with an art sponge. I prefer a stencil as I have more control over the pattern and the sharpness or blur of splotch edges.

In order to give the backbone a scale pattern mesh is used. Its cut in oblong circle shapes based on the size of the blank being painted. The mesh shown here is the small style sold by Lures Unlimited. Its a little stiff straight out of the package but can be loosened up. This mesh is about a year old.
In this picture the mesh has been stretched over the lure blanks and fastened in place with alligator clips. Save yourself and extra step by taking care not to scratch the belly paint when fastening the mesh on with the clips.

Here are the lures after the mesh has been removed and the stencil work is done. Note the shaded eye sockets and gill plates. Turn the air pressure down and over thin the paint just a little to do the detail work. Keeping the airbrush just the right distance from the blank is critical.

The painted blanks have air dried for a while and are now ready for the 5.5mm eyes to be added. Once the eyes are on tight its time for the epoxy clear coat to be brushed on. After a few hours the epoxy has dried and the lure is ready for hooks and rings to be added.

Heres the finished product. The lure on top is a black crappie painted using this method, and just for reference, Ive included a white crappie painted from a different schedule below it.

Hope you enjoyed the 1-2-3 easy crappie patterntexas.

Very informative post and great looking baits, this is one pattern I have got to spend time on just to many shad paint jobs for me right now I have a jointed panfish bait that I'm going to play with this week and see if I can make it look half as good as these crappie you posted.

No the Iwata CS-HP gets a lot of use and needs a little cleaning...I'm just too lazy to do it. blush
Maybe a post on properly cleaning an airbrush is in order??

It's pretty simple to do, takes me about 3-4 hours to paint...and I'm slow. Tried to make the post informative and instructional...getting back to learning the "artwork" involved in lure building seems like a good idea. Hoping folks will want to contribute or drop in and enjoy the work. texas

Following up on this post...I've been told by a reliable source coach that using Createx and Wicked paints together on the same pattern is not the best way to go. Something to do with the way the paints are made. One is "softer" than the other and dries and hardens differently. Not a huge thing but, still good to know. So best to stick with Createx or Wicked and not switch back and forth.

These are stunning. You said you seal them first. Why? and with what?

Actually, createx is a fabric paint and is made with dry pigments vs wicked which is made using liquid dye. Not a problem using both on a bait...the upside with wicked is you get a more detail finish using less psi and allowing you to layer your colors which is the key to a great pattern.

Wicked Colors are waterborne, meaning that they contain solvents that improve performance. Wicked Colors cure to a durable film with air drying alone(self-cross linking). Wicked Colors acrylic binder is intended for exterior applications without top-coating and is water-resistant after curing. Not so for Createx Airbrush Colors which are an acrylic based airbrush paint formulated for use on fabric, leather, paper, canvas, wood, ceramics, and clay. Createx Airbrush Colors cure with the assistance of heat after drying. The use of heat to cure colors is one of the main differences between Createx Airbrush Colors and Wicked Colors which cures to a much stronger film with air drying alone. Not a problem using both paints on one lure...just not the optimal solution. Pick one or the other for best results. texas

Createx paints are designed for fabric and not hard surfaces so a sealer of some kind over the plastic tends to improve the "paintability" of the hard plastic...in my opinion. Generally I've found that spraying a clear topcoat on the lure before painting helps the paint layer on smoother and adhere a bit better. 2cents
