 GPS charts question

I just bought a new boat, and am working on electronics now. If I have the unit at the console and bow connected, do I need a map card for each unit? Or will the maps "share" on both units?

Depends on the brand and model. Some share mapping and some do not.
What specific brand and model are you interested in?
There are too many variables to state every possible scenario in a forum reply.

I only know that answer for Lowrance HDS. If you happen to buy Lowrance HDS Gen 2 or later, multiple units can share one map if the units are networked & properly configured. If you buy any used HDS Gen 1 gear, it won't.

I'm looking at the new Humminbird Helix 10 and 12 Neither of those will share map data. Only the ONIX and ION series in Humminbird products will do that.
