Took a picture of this crappie's diet. They were full of these 4" shad in the mornings. As you can see she has her eggs too. Anyone care for some caviar!!! Lol.

A lot of people think crappie's main menu item is the minnow, but actually, they like sandies cats and bass, will really go for shad, usually the threadfin. I have cleaned more crappie with shad in the gut than minnows. One exception, last month I ran into a big school of big crappie full of ghost minnows, as were the sandies that were mixed in with them.

They do love shad though.

I haven't seen a ghost minnow in years..

There used to be a guy an his wife on lake graham that would show up with quarter to half dollar size perch and kill the crappie at night.

Pretty sure crappie will eat whatever is in front of him.

Gravel pits along the Elm Fork have healthy populations of ghost minnows. In fact that one day the crappie and sandies were gorging themselves on huge pods of ghost minnows. Both the sandies and crappie i cleaned from that day were full of em.

crappie are pretty opportunistic feeders, they'll eat shad, ghost minnows, shiners, bluegill, crawfish, and even other crappie. Basically if it swims in front of them they will eat it, the deal is on most lakes shad are the most readily available food. I have cleaned many black crappie on ponds that were FULL of crawfish, and I once cut a 4-5" bluegill out of a 2lb crappies stomach in a pond.

If you haven't tried them. crappie eggs are quite tasty. When they are still firm, you can roll them in some flour, salt, and pepper, and drop them in the fryer. With some grits...good eatin'.
