I have considered catching some gills at small ponds for use as cut bait for Blues. I was considering keeping the gills in a bag inside my ice chest. How long would you guys expect the bluegills to be good bait if kept in ice chest with Ice?

If I'm not going to use them that day I put them alive in a zip lock bag with water and salt and drop them in the freezer with the bag flattened out so they freeze fast. This way they keep their color longer and are easy to thaw out. Mine will last about 2 weeks this way before they lose color.
They look fresh caught when thawed out. Use them quick and don't re-freeze.

From Genesis: "And God promised men that good and obedient wives would be found in all corners of the earth."

Then He made the earth round...and He laughed and laughed and laughed!

I freeze many at one time and use them as needed for my juglines, over several months time. They work just as good as fresh cut as far as I can tell. Or let me rephrase that. They work well enough that I always catch fish. Maybe I would have done better with fresh, who knows, but I don't always have time to get fresh ones.

90% of the time if i'm using bluegills, they're alive. But for shad, I just throw em in a cooler with ice. They'll be good for 36-48 hours.

Here is a tip for you, if your going to keep them on ice, use sonic ice and leave your drain plug opened.
You can layer them in the ice and the y will stay fresh longer

Spend $10 at walmart and buy a battery operated aerator that come with a lid for 5 galon bucket... with a bucket of Lake water you can keep bluegills alive for a week with occasional sprinkles of bread crumbs.

Why do I go fishing? To catch a box of fish and/or some quality time under the sun. Thank Heaven I never fail fishing in Texas, catching box fish or plenty of sunburn.

Wipe the slime off each one..I layer my bait ....I have real thick Styrofoam container's.... I freeze water bottles and put them filling the bottom.....then 3inch of ice bait then ice then bait....then I have a bucket that stays out side collecting rin water... I soak A small towel in it wrong it out fold it cover my bait (shad &skip jack's) then I seal the box with duct tape...I do have a drain made from a bic pen....the container stYs out side & I drain it...might seem crazy...I can keep shad over a week....

If it ain't broke don't fix it...but go ahead and work on it anyway.....
