My opinion is this. I know, everyone has one.
It depends - depth of fish; shape, size, and build of boat can be factors of how loud you should thump. Any very sharp loud first thump can drive them off, think of it like tapping on the side of an aquarium - the fish bolt and some even injure themselves running into the sides.
The bottom of your boat can be a large speaker, problem is you are usually insulated from the actual bottom. Sometimes thumping the sides can be more effective. It can also be more offensive if too loud. I think the best procedure is to locate fish, thump easy at first and increase if they don't respond. Robert and I have been thumping for several years now and we are not convinced that it calls them in but that it does keep them around longer if they are already there.

Robert and I have been thumping for several years now and we are not convinced that it calls them in but that it does keep them around longer if they are already there. This is true, except for the part about it not calling them in. I have had several trips. where I was retieing, putting fish in the box, or whatever and stopped thumping (when I use to do it with an oar), and watched the fish disappear from the ff, and the guys on the boat got bored waiting for a bite. They would always say "come on call 'em back". As soon as I started thumping, the fish would show back up on the screen and the guys would start hauling them in again. I'm not saying it will make them swim 1/4 or 1/2 mile to my boat, but they are generally in the area. There has to be a reason for them to be there in the first place. Food source???

Sea Pro, I heard the sandies gave you an 85. Said you had a good beat and they could dance to it. The lyrics, or lack thereof, is what brought your score down.

FYI, a few hubbard buddies got the "Here Fishy Fishy" thumpers from Jeff jbobo and they like it. Work great. What a simple but smart design, Jeff. I am an engineer and the design made me feel proud. I have two designs before I saw Jeffs. I like Jeffs better. I enjoyed building them but my wife hated the constant thump rackets. I have to wait till she goes shopping to test Fyi, the parts take a while to come in. So you better contact jbobo asap before deadstick season is over.

Rudy Oh no Rudy, I was playing "We got the beat" by the Go-Gos, and another group of sandies requested "Just beat it!" by Michael Jackson. You gotta give into the fishes requests

I think I'll stay away from that area! Some of the ones who don't like thumpers might be hunting me up to try to eliminate the supplier. lol I appreciate all the great responses and kind words from you guys. I am thinking of changing the name from "Here Fishy, Fishy". Do ya'll have any ideas? Thumper is already taken legally. Let me know what you think.
