Been going after work and this afternoon on the llano. These were the best five out of around twenty today, all were from 8" to 10". Do all the trout stocked in Texas come from the same place? Every year I hear people who say they talked to someone that said next year they are getting better fish but every year they are the same size. I wish the supplier would give the state a break on a lil bit bigger fish.

I didn't find one fly they hit on the whole time. Id catch 4 or 5 on one then 2 or 3 on another, I would just fish the holes going down then walk back change
I caught the most on this fly, it's a no. 10 hook.

The only place I haven't done as good is Scott's slab ( co rd 102) I think the fish are scattered downstream there I caught some all the way to the last hole before it narrows and gets shallow.

I hear they put in a few decent fish at each place but 99% of them are going to be just like those. The Trinity River in Fort Worth to get some stockings from the Fort Worth water department of some better fish each year some of them 12 to 13 inches. They put three or so brood fish in at pk each time I do you leave but of the 9000 fish they put in only 6 to 9 good fish is not much.

Look on the right hand column of this list. At the bottom of the page they have the full name of the different hatcheries that supply us with trout.

This statement isn't quiet right, that's just a list of all of the TP&W fish hatcheries. We got a tour of the PK fish hatchery during the Trout 101 event last weekend. They are one of the hatcheries that hold and distribute the trout stockings. I think he said that only two of the hatcheries deal with trout in Texas, but neither of them actually breed and raise trout. The fish at PK came from a hatchery in Missouri.

Basically, TP&W buys the trout, then holds them in tanks and fattens them up before stocking. The fish are all the same size because they are all the same age and have been fed the same amount.

He talked about stocking larger fish and it pretty much boils down to cost. As the fish grow larger, they eventually reach a size where they start eating each other. At that point, you'll have bigger fish, but a whole lot fewer of them. Plus the longer you keep the fish at the hatchery, the more cost, (feed, staff, etc.) get spent on each batch of fish. That means budget would support fewer stockings.

It's a trade off. You get more fish if you stock them at a smaller size, but if they are too small, then nobody is going fish for them and they'll get eaten too quickly by native fish.

One surprise of the tour, was about the white, palomino, golden, or whatever you want to call them trout. The white color is a genetic mutation that occurs naturally. Apparently, 100+ years ago a fish hatchery on the east coast started selective breeding to get more of this coloring and the fish that we see stocked today are descendants of this brood stock that randomly occur. The numbers included in the Texas shipments are random and do not signify anything other than a color that would not survive very long in a natural environment.

Just to confirm what Rex said above, the PK hatchery holds and distributes trout across North and West Texas, all the stock trout come from one trout hatchery and sold to TP&W. There are larger trout held there but are distributed to a few select sites in the distribution area, none of them to rivers but to certain small lakes/ponds, I can not remember what those sites are that the manager told us.

Well I guess instead of wishing they put bigger fish in I should just be thankful tpwd does all they do. They do jump a lot and put up a good fight. Even for little fellas.

If I'm not mistaken, the true source of the rainbows stocked by TPWD is the Crystal Springs Hatchery near Ava, MO. They breed and grow a heat resistant Emerson strain of trout that seem to do well in Texas. These trout are trucked to the various TPWD hatcheries and held until it is time to stock them. According to my conversations with Carl Kittel, the Director of Hatchery Operations who manages the trout stocking program, the vast majority of the fish are in the 8-10 inch class. They have a few 10-12 inch fish that are stocked in the inner city fisheries as part of the Community Fishin' program.

Guadalupe River TU gets their larger trout (14-24 inches) from the same hatchery in Missouri and typically stock the Guadalupe three or four times each winter, in a Thanksgiving to Easter time frame. All their trout are stocked in the Special Regulations zone of the Guadalupe.

Crystal River also supplies the fish to Lower MOuntain Fork in SE Oklahoma. They get a one year older class of fish - most in the 11-18" range and some bigger. As stated above - they are Emerson rainbows that are heat tolerant and try to spawn right out of the truck. Feisty fish.
