I've been away from fishing for so long that I'm not sure which brands are trustworthy and which ones are junk. A few weeks ago I bought a cheap Shakespeare spinning rig and although it isn't terrible I'd eventually like to replace it with something that will last.
Open to any and all suggestions.

I have always be partial to the Shakespeare UL Ugly Stick Combos. I use the heck out of them. They are not expensive and have always given me super performance. If you are looking to up grade Bass Pro has a whole series of UL combos that are not that expensive. As for line I use six pound test with size six cricket hooks. That is just me. Always remember to use what is most comfortable for you. Side Note: You should get some pretty good responses. There are a lot of good anglers here that I am sure will share their tackle opinions with you.
IGFA World Record Rio Grande Cichlid. Lake Dunlap. John 3:16 Sinner's Prayer. God forgive me a sinner. I accept Jesus Christ as my Savior !

Thanks! The combo I have came with 6# but I replaced it with 4#, and I've actually been thinking about going back up to 6#. Lot of snags in the Guadalupe these days.

If you "want something that will last" then I agree 100% with Chuck's recommendation with the Ugly Stik rods. I use them too and my fave is the Ugly Stik Lite model with cork handle. Rod tips can be easy to break on most rods, but not Ugly Stiks. And they are guaranteed not to break.
I will also use Daiwa Spinmatic Ultra Light rods in 7.5 foot length for "flipping" type casting and 6 foot for finessing very light lures. A really good rod for $39.
For reels I am partial to Shimano spinning reels. I use the Sienna and Sahara models.

I have always favored the ugly stick rods. As for reels I got to agree with Doc. Love the Shimano!
I usually do not target the Sunfish! Love catching Catfish,Stripers,Crappie, and White Bass!

I am partial to the Shakespeare Agility rigs in a 7 foot rod, but I agree the Ugly Stick is more durable. I like the action of the Agility.

My go-to combo for gill chasing is: Short 4'6 shakespeare UL with 4# hi vis! For some reason, the bigger gills will get a major workout with this lil combination!!! Works great for me whether jigging or bobber fishing!
Katchin krappie...doin surgeries(filleting)...and givin hott grease baths until krunchy and golden brown is what it's all about!!!
"STAY ready for the THUMP"!!!!

I like Ugly Stiks for entry level, but I really like Bass Pro Micro Lite Graphite series rods for entry level all the way up to expert guide level. They are just a superb rod series and do everything a panfisherman can ever want. They are graphite and the tips are pure carbon so they aren't as durable as the Ugly Stiks, but what the lack in durability they more than make up for in sensitivity and versibility.
For reels I'm still a big fan of Pflueger reels, but it's more because the fit my hand best.

Use six pound test line on the sunfish. Size eight hooks. Drop shot method. I love the UL series rods from Bass Pro. As for the reels I love the Shimano. For Crappie I use medium tackle.
