Myself and Mike "USMC-GY" hit the Guadalupe River at day break to catch some Rainbow Trout. The current is extremely fast due the water being let out of Canyon Lake. The fast current made it tough. We limited out by 11:00 a.m. with a cooler of 10 fish. We had about 10 fish get off after a short fight. Fish were hanging somewhat close to the bank at the edge of currents. Fish were caught using Berkley orange power worms,Berkley Trout Bait-cheese colored,small artificial flies,and Super Duper Lures. Bottom and drop shot techniques were both used. After a super morning of trout fishing we had a FANTASTIC BREAKFAST at Granny D's just down from the Canyon Dam! Getting a limit of Rainbow Trout on the Guadalupe River. It just don't get any better!

Hey Banker are Trout native out there or are they stocked there during the winter like in the ponds ?

Thanks guys for the replies! "Aquiles": They are stocked by Parks&Wildlife. Some actually survive for several years after they are stocked! "MulGogiHunter": Granny D's is simply OUTSTANDING! Great Food especially their pancakes! "Doc"; Will be catching trout from now until early March! Great eating fish!

Those are beautiful fish , I have to make a trip out there one year.

Late fall all the way until early Spring you have great chances to catch trout in the Guadalupe River. You can catch trout all year around in the Guadalupe on certain parts of the river.





Side Note: The Guadalupe River is one GREAT fishery for many types of other fish as well!

What type of artificial flies did y'all use?

I grew up fishing trout in Northern NM. One of these days I need to get other there to the Guad and see if I can find some. Really have no idea where to fish.

Thanks Mark,Jamie,and John for the replies. John: Trout stockings will be taking place on the Guadalupe River all the way through the end of January! Hyco Springs,Mountain Breeze,and the Canyon Trail Race will be areas stocked by Parks&Wildlife. There will also be several private stockings that will occure in the trophy zones. (You would need to check the rules/laws for fishing in the trophy zones. ) Jamie: I will get Mike to tell you about the flies he was using.(Stay tuned) Mark: Will be hitting the east side. I know it's further but it is well worth it!
