Did anyone else notice the hundreds of dead tilapia in the the north creek? The water was 54 degrees (in the creek), I know they a warm water fish, did they just go up the wrong creek and die? There were no bass or any other kind of fish....
Thanks, Brettk1

54 degrees will definitely kill some strains of Tilapia.

54 degrees will definitely kill some strains of Tilapia. This I'm sure those were in the creek when all that cold rain water ran in.

I wish they would all die thenvi could fish somewhere without nets splashing all around me and when I pulled up to the courtesy dock there were not 10 people fishing of the dam thing just staring at me and casting like wth are you pulling up to the dock. It's because it's a courtesy dock!

Then they had the decency to give ME and my nephew and son the stink eye because we were trying to get past them up the creek! All for some stupid tilapia!

This particular one in Squaw Creek is a blue tilapia as I recall and it is one of the most cold hardy of the species. I believe they can handle down to 45 degree water temps.
Perhaps, they are a bit like shad which often die if the water temps change too drastically. Lots of fish have good temperature ranges but they can't take sudden changes . . . need more time to acclimate.
They have a fast repeating spawning cycle, like mice and rats, so they can really take over.
Gosh, there have been some big ones out there this year. I caught one while bass fishing that was so big, I thought I had hooked into a really big carp. And, two friends fishing out of Dannie Golden's boat caught a couple that looked 3 or 4 pounds.
If the power plants are ever down over winter months in a cold snap, I'd suspect there'd be a really big kill out there.

How did those tilapia get in the lake in the first place? a guy up river has a private lake. The dam busted during some flooding and they made it in the river. That's the story I was told by the ranch owner. If it's true or not I don't know but he came in the store telling me about it one day. I've seen tulip is in squaw since the first day it re opened. Thought they were Oscar and couldn't get them to bite anything. One was completely white.
