Really want to get out and catch some alligator gar, is it even worth trying this time of year? I would go somewhere local to the Trinity River over My Christmas break with a buddy, it looks like a blast and I have the gear to get it done. Any tips on what bait to use if it's different in the winter time? Also would I use floats or let it sit on bottom? Any info helps!

its been my experience that the gar bite slows dramaticaly in the winter sometimes becoming non existent. with that being said all fish still have to eat so i would give it a try! i still use the same baits i use in summer bluegills, gizzard shad, and the bait we shall not speak of. downsizing the bait seems to help but you end up catching smaller gar also. fish wth floats and on the bottom and let the fish tell you how they want the bait presented. good luck! and post a report

Id fish on the bottom with smaller baits, the bait we dont speak of being carp or buffalo. Small baits would be an ounce or two maybe three. You will get some blue cats. The trinity is much easier to fish when the water is not high. High water requires fishing slow pockets and spreada fish out. I wouldnt bother with high water and cold water, thats ok for blue cats though.

Is there any other places around the DFW area we could catch Gar with these conditions?

Around dfw your best bet will be south Dallas by loop 12 there's a boat ramp. Lot off ppl fish under that bridge. Water is real high now in this area.

Wait on spring, not worth the trouble with high water and winter.
