Okay, help me out you Creekers, why do I hear and know that you can currently find crappie in 40 feet of water say at Fork and you are catching fish is say 4-10 feet of water, wouldn't the genetics want to put the fish in deeper water? with current temps?

Signed; confused

It's all about the shad migration.Fork and Lake of the Pines crappie are known to go deep in the winter because the shad move deep but in a lot of other lakes shad go up the creeks and crappie, sand bass, and bass follow.I fish creeks around Dallas and I have caught crappie as shallow as 2 to 3 feet around dark.Every lake has it's own winter pattern and just ask the locals.

Thanks guys, and well said @crappiehunter.

Where ever the shad are the crappie are there with them. Believe it or not the creeks will have a warmer water temp than your main lake. Shad would die off if they didn't migrate up your creeks.

I think to crappie fish year round a person should learn the bait fish. Here in north east Texas we have two types of shad the threadfin and gizzard and they both do there on thing in cold water. Also we have minnows but they are a lot like the gizzard shad in habits. Sure worth a persons time to do a look up and learn habits and see what they look like.

Crappieking, measure the water temp in the creek next time out, you may find that it is warmer than the lake water temp and that's the reason shad are in there.

Nice limit.

Believe it or not there are still a ton of people I talk to that look at me and think, "OK, he drank the Kool Aid", when I tell them that the winter crappie season is the best crappie season of them all, until i show them the pictures, then they are the ones with the stunned look on their faces, lol.

Most folks are fair weather fisherman so they wait until the spring when the temps are warmer & the crappie go shallow....
