I pretty much did the same thing last winter and I do not regret it. It is now my favorite way to fish. I have found pitch and flipping for me is the most productive way to fish a jig. Flip it at your target (making as little surface disturbance as possible), let it fall on slack line. Give it a few seconds after it hits bottom and then check it by easing back on your rod. If it is still there then give it a short hop or drag or...... but if you loose your jig then odds are she has picked it up and is swimming away. Reel in your slack and set the hook. For me 90% of the time they hit it on the fall and you never see or feel the hit. At first it is very aggravating and is difficult to detect the bite but over time it starts to get intuitive. You will instinctively know how long it takes to hit the bottom at 5' or 10' or 15' or 20' or....... and when some thing seems off about the fall you know it has stopped on a limb or a bass has it in her / his mouth. The best way I can describe this bite is you loose your jig. You will know what I mean after you get the experience of making 1,000 pitches at a certain depth and not getting a bite. But when you start to get that feel then its game on. Now if I can put the jig down I want to start learning how to catch them on big swim baits.......

Time and time again, this is why a jig is my favorite bait. So versatile. Trailer color doesn't have to match the jig, I have caught them both ways. Play with color combos and different styles of jigs. If it were me, I would support a TFF'r who builds them in the classified section. But like said earlier, fish natural colors like a watermelon, or green pumpkin and black/blue is usually good year round and in more stained water. Drag em, flip em, even swim em (doesn't necessarily have to be a swim jig to swim it). This is why I keep a jig on the deck year round. They catch bigger fish and you lose less fish when hooked up. And, for me, starting out using a heaver jig helped me feel what I was fishing and feel what what was happening as I figured out how to fish a jig. Commit to it, you will not regret it.

Big Kev!
PERFECT explanation on a jig bite for flipping and pitching. The intuitive part is dead on. It starts to get like a gut feeling sometimes. You just, in the back of your head, know it didn't feel "normal". And it probably wasn't. SET THE HOOK! Sometimes, it is a pop. Sometimes they start swimming away and the line starts to tug. But, that said, I am usually pitching towards structure or cover that is near deeper water, that I'm floating in. When a bass sees it and takes it on the fall, or even after the drop, it seems to head towards the boat (deeper water). When I does that, I seldom feel a bite. I hopefully see the line twitch or move. Mostly I just intuitively know it wasn't "right". A few times I have had to move the boat further from the strike zone to get more time to catch up on the fish to set a hook.
Eat. Sleep. Fish.

Learning to fish a jig; I would use some high visibility braid main line to 5ft of fluoro or copoly leader. Until you hone the feel and instinctive nature of when to set the hook/when not to set the hook with a jig; having the extra visual clues provided by high visibility line and extra sensitivity of low stretch braid could be helpful.

Do it. I've always done better with natural dark colors like green pumpkin and black and blue. 3/8-1/2 oz size. Flippin style jigs for heavier cover, football jigs on flats, bluff walls and flipping shallow water. Denny Brauer Structure jig for skippin docks. I stick to rage craw trailers, BUT you want less movement in the trailer with colder water temps, so a beaver/rodent style bait works well for that. What brand is your favorite flipping style jig? I have a good supply of football jigs but need to place an order for some flipping jigs. As Billy said, the M pack is very good, I've had good success with them along with Sebile. You definitely want one with a stout hook. I started using jewel finesse football jigs recently and have had success with the smaller profile for high pressured fish.

Many thanks to all of you for your replies. I'm not new to jig fishing. Off and on, I have caught a lot of bass on jigs. But I've always had more confidence in my ability to fish a Texas or Carolina rig, so I've never committed to the jig long enough and often enough to learn the little subtleties and get real good at it. That's what I want to do this winter, stick to it and become a better jig fisherman, and reap the rewards of catching larger fish on average. Once I make my mind up to do something, I usually do it, and I'm just about ready to make the commitment. All of your comments and encouragement are helpful.

So glad I stumbled across this thread...after reading all your comments I've decided to do the same things as the OP this winter since I'm pretty unfamiliar with jigs. Can't wait!

So after reading all the interest in this technique and having forced myself to learn this way once upon a time, in the TFF Christmas spirit, I will offer instructional jig fishing trips for a full day for one or two people for $300/ day. This offer will extend for trips booked from this weekend until new year's weekend or Jan. 3rd. You can reach by phone or my website or Facebook page. Links and number listed below. Thanks and good luck to all you new jig fisherman.
