I have some kids moving to TX. Im looking for some reasonable places to flyfish for Peacock, smallmouth, or largemouth bass. Somewhere south of Houston. Anyone have any good ideas they might share? thanks Clearflowingwater@gmail.com A great flyfishing reference book- http://www.amazon.com/Essential-Tips-Eve...hing+essentials

Hi. Are you moving to south texas or just looking for some places to fish down there? I haven't heard of peacock bass being placed anywhere in the US besides south florida. would be considered an invasive species anywhere else and they don't survive anywhere it gets "cold". As for smallmouth bass being anywhere south of Houston I sure doubt it with the water temps being too high. I know they are in some north dallas lakes but that's a long ways away from Houston. Largemouth can be caught anywhere so shouldn't be hard- maybe just finding places where you will have plenty of back-casting room so you don't get tangled up.
I'm sure someone from that area will get on and give ya some more specific information.

Yea no peacock bass and not many smallmouth in public water in Texas bud. But there will be largemouth in every puddle of water down there. Catching them will be easy. Lots of big bluegills too that would be fun on a fly rod. Again they'll literally be in every pond and canal down there.

Pecos River and Devils River are loaded with smallmouth but that is South and West of Houston both feeding Lake Amistad. Was just south of Houston over Thanksgiving and there are plenty of places to bass fish and saltwater fly fish for Red Fish and Speckled Trout.
See you on the lake and have a great day!

Guadalupe, Comal, San Marcos and Colorado have Smallies too... biggest we're catching are around 21". Fighters for sure. Definitely on the fly also, large craw patterns work well in late summer especially. Check out All Water Guides, they really put people on bass around Central Texas. Within 2-3 hours of Houston.

Hawaii is south of Houston, and they have Fly fisherman by for Peacocks! I used to pond fish for large mouth in the ponds around North Texas. Nothing I can help you with around Houston.
