I have a rare free day tomorrow and wanted to take the boat out. Can you launch at Dunlap with the current high water release levels coming out of Canyon Lake?

Yes, you can fish it. I've been fishing it twice a week since the week after the flood. It was really bad in the beginning and I managed to only hit a few really small floaters (thank God I didn't rip the lower unit off). As of earlier this week, it's no problem to run. I wouldn't go WOT but 40-45 MPH is ok. Just be careful and look out for floaters. The ramp under I35 is tough right now because the water is a little lower than normal; ramp is really steep and not very much room for error. However, I've been launching my 20' fiberglass boat with very little problems. The Schuman's ramp is 100% fine. Be careful out there and if you launch under I35, remember to play the current to your favor. You can PM me for more details about running the lake if you'd like.

canyon lake release info

Yes, I was there last night. The water was as high as I've seen it in about 2 months. About a month ago they couldn't release water fast enough, it was FLOWING! However, as of the past 2 weeks, there's very little current, which means they're not releasing a lot of water from Canyon. That's odd because the Water Data for Texas website says that Canyon is 0.73 above full pool but last night I was told by a reliable source that Canyon is still 8ft above full pool, and that they're just not releasing a bunch of water anymore. They're releasing a little bit here and there. But who knows... I do know that at any given day, Dunlap will drop, then the next day it's back up. It's been fluctuating a lot lately!

I hardly ever look at the water flow data anymore. I can usually just tell when I get near the general area of I35 if they're releasing water because of the current. I'm not at all saying that it's bad to look at the flow chart, I just personally never look because I just look when I get to the ramp.

The water has cleared up well on Dunlap and the current has slowed down just a little. You should have no problems at all! Fished Dunlap twice this week.

I never followed up.... My luck, loaded the boat up and just before I left the house I noticed my steering cable was jammed up. Took it to the shop instead of the lake. Guess the good Lord wanted me to get some other errands run.

Moral of the story: I better take the boat out more often.
