I'm a hybrid, sand bass, striper guide. I've noticed when I start thumping, the cats move in also. Especially since I started using my new electric thumper,(It's called the "Here Fishy, Fishy"). It's seems like the last few months when I turn it on, the catfish go crazy. I've caught more cats than I have all the others put together. Have any of you done any thumping with your oar or broom handle, and noticed this happening?

Since I have never targeted stripers or hybrids I had never even hear of thumping until you explained it, but I will be trying it in the near future. Maybe someone will even get me one of your thumpers for Christmas.

Yup, small eater blues sometimes come in...large trophys don't though. It's very sporadic though.

Hate to tinkle on sort of speak against anything legal that that helps catch fish-
But I have.been around thumpers before and it annoys me enough that I wil move from a spot to get out of earshot-
And personally I wont take that peace away from other fisherman just to catch more fish-
I realize this is not the way everybody feels, and I don't fish for a living -
But since I have been in earshot of a thumper a couple of times, I would never take a guide who thumps nor do it myself-
I need to add that I have asked more than one guy who I respect that are on the water way more
than I am and both guys told me they hear it does help Catch more fish and that they just kinda get used to it-

Steve
I have mine stored way back under the swim platform, so it is hardly noticeable on my deck much less to any other boats around. It's ok if you want to move away though. lol.
One of my fishing buddies was ranting about thumpers one day while we were fishing. He said it drives him nuts to listen to it. About an hour later I turned on my thumper and waited for his reaction. It took 15 min. before he ask what the noise was. I ask what noise. He said it sounds kinda like a bilge pump but way slower. When I told him, he couldn't believe it. He said as quiet as it was it wasn't annoying at all.
I try not to fish close to anyone else anyway. I like my own space with nature.
I don't make my living on the water. It's my hobby that I do to help others get out and catch a few.

I am with Steve...there is this one guide on Tawakoni I refer to as "Chief Sitting Bull" because he is always pounding on his boat with a pipe...it sounds like a Indian War drum. I have never caught a fish over 10#s when be is within a mile.

Don't know about thumping, but there is a particular situation where the splashing thing helps, but then again mostly eaters.

Sounds like the kind of thumper you have is not the kind that I have run into-
Bless you----
I react the same to the loud thumpers the same as I would to the extreme loud music type
Boats-
I just move where I can't hear it-
You sound like you care , thanks for that and also I realise you were Posting here trying to help others catch more Fish and appreciate that -

Does the thumping technique work with an aluminum boat? I would think that it would take much less force to make an equally loud sound in the water on an aluminum boat.

It will, I think, with the Here Fishy, Fishy. It's a rubber mallet hitting a rubber pad mounted to a plastic base. It has it's own sound that will vibrate through the hull. I haven't tried it in an aluminum hulled boat yet, though. I have thumped with a boat oar on the deck of my buddy's Tracker aluminum boat. The oar thing does work on it. And there are adjustments you can make on my mechanical thumper to make a quieter or louder sound. Pm me if your interested, and we can talk about it. Thanks, jeff

If it makes other fisherman annoyed and makes them move away then it is probably working, The first time I heard of this I was fishing with a guide on Whitney years ago and we heard some banging, thought someone had motor problems, well he explained it to me and said those guys were also known to do a some drinking as well. but over the years I kept hearing more and more about it so there must be something to it.
