Just an FYI. They just added a ton of nets to their clearance section if anyone likes to save some money. Only a couple small taped nets though. http://castnets.com/clearance.php

I think the price at Academy is still cheaper than their clearance prices.

I think the price at Academy is still cheaper than their clearance prices. Most of these nets are much bigger, heavier, and better than the nets at academy.

Academy carries the 750 series. The 1000 series is 1 lb/ft and the 1500 series is 1.5 lb/ft. They are also 6 panel nets that open much easier and the heavier weight sinks faster. I doubt anyone with an Academy net will be netting deep water shad this winter.

I net shad in 30-40ft of water every year with a 7ft blue colored net with lead weights. I also have an 8ft lead from Betts I do the same..... shad in deep water is not an issue where we live...and yes when we come to Tawakoni we always catch shad there deep too...... #1 the net must be 100% open #2 someone needs to drive the boat that can adjust position so there is ZERO tension on the pull cord until it hits bottom...
If it ain't broke don't fix it...but go ahead and work on it anyway.....

It must be a local or regional deal as to what they stock in a particular Academy. I got two of the 1000 series nets at the one in Wichita Falls last year. They were the only two on the shelf, and were on clearance.

Alright experts, I was looking at this page of clearance case nets and I have a question. Would you guys suggest one of the 5 and a half foot taped nets, or a larger untapped net? Let's say 10 ft for fun ( I know 7 is the legal size in TX, I am asking for argument sake.
Thanks, Olen

The bigger, the better. I know, I wanted a 7' taped net on clearance too. Darn! Can't make myself buy a 5' net. Takes 3 casts more to catch the same as a 7'. I wonder if the shad wouldn't all move away by the time a deep water 5' reached the deeper depths? IMO

I would recommend the largest taped net that you could afford with at least 1-1.5 lb/ft of lead. Then just go with a 7' if you see any game wardens looking.

IMO Ok here is my 2 cents- I bought a 7ft taped net and loved it but tore it up way too soon- Then bought a high end 5 ft taped cause they were out of the 7ft taped - It is different for sure- I then taped a heavy lead 7 ft good cast net myself with a good quality duct tape- It worked Great and is still Good- I will never pay for a taped Net again, it does Take some time but wasn't hard and very worth it-

What kind of tape did you use? I used the gorilla heavy duty tape- Seems like I remember seeing a water proof tape somewhere but I have thrown my net several times since I put the gorilla tape on and it hasn't shown any signs of coming undone yet- And again it wasn't hard at all-

You can use clear packing tape. The kind that you put on a roller machine and tape both sides so the tape sticks to the other tape on the other side. Clear and heavy duty. Plus even the name brand good tape is like $4 for like 4-6 rolls! I wouldn't tape any net that wasn't at least 1.5lbs per radius foot and less than 6'. All mine are 7 footers except for one being an outside Texas net in a separate bucket.
