What site is that you go to to see how much flow is coming out of PK in to the Brazos. Thinking of yaking there this weekend for stripers. I see that the lake is still almost 2 ft under with even the rain.
thanks in advance! JP

It's running close to 9,000 cfs. It's not safe at the moment.

Thanks for the link!
What is a safe flow number? ( where I can paddle and get out and wade above the 16 bridge?)

Others may have a different opinion, but I think between 200 and 500 is good.

I like the flow at around 200. It can be a little tough getting under the bridge when it is up around 400 to 500 but it has been my experience once you get North of the bridge the rest of the trip to the dam is not bad. There are a several places to wade between the Highway 16 bridge and the dam. The first large run North of dam is pretty deep on the west side of the run. I was there the other day and it was 7 and 8 feet in several places. If you will watch some of the recent youtube.com video of the guys that have been catching stripers toward the dam take a look at the landscape and the trees and you will recognize the place when you get there. If you go send us some pictures. I think with all the water being let out of PK there should be a new batch of hungry fish.

This is the flow downstream at Highway 4 where Rochelle's Canoe Rental is located.

thanks for all the info! way more than i expected and awesome. i will probably pass on this weekend based on it being at 8700 right now. no mater what, it doesn't seem safe anywhere around the 16 bridge or by the dam.

have any of you all yaked below whitney? does the same apply there and can you yak back up to the car or do you have to get out and shuttle back?

The Riverside Park below the dam at Whitney has been closed for several weeks. I talked with the people in charge of the park and they said the park would be closed for a while for safety of kayakers. I am anxious to be able to get back on the river and catch some fish!

I know it is only guesswork on our part, but anyone think that PK may slow the flow down to a safe level by Sat ?

And if so will fishing be good or bad after such a large release ?

I wouldn't mind heading back if the CFS was below 300 or so.

We've got at least 1 week before the water's gone enough to get on the rivers. Most of the lakes in the area will be closed for a while, but there are ways to get on them. It's not what you want, but you can get on Aquilla from Aquilla creek right now. You've got some paddling before you get to the lake but if you want to try, go down hwy 22 towards Whitney. Once you get to the little town of Peoria and look for HCR (Hill county road) 2415S and it will be on the left. Go down it a couple of miles and you'll find a fairly new bridge going over the creek. You can launch a yak there and go down to the lake fishing all the way. banana

there will be a lot of mess in all bodies of water
my Dad is on Lake Arlington, it will take at least 10 days to be fishable

cannot imagine PK or below the dam being better

I posted my question on the BRA facebook page and the official reply was that they planned to close the 1 flood gate that is open Wed or Thursday.

So we should be able to kayak up from the hwy 16 bridge and fish the pools below the dam on Sat, will need to keep an eye on the river gauge jut below the dam.

I am seriously considering going Sat morning, if the flow goes down, the paddle will be nice and I just enjoy that area even if I don't catch a ton of fish. I like that I can paddle, drift, get out and wade fish etc.

That's good advice from Cowtown Kid. As far as what flow is good, I've been on the river between 50 and 200 and that was all fine. I'm not sure about 500. I think fishing might be better at higher flows but getting upstream will be a lot more work. At 500 I'd give it a try and see. At 1000 I wouldn't try it.

If you want to keep an eye on any of the river flows or lake levels I highly recommend you learn to use this site: http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/rt

Click on the state you want, then use the drop down box to select streamflow or lakes and reservoirs. Then you can use he drop down boxes to refine it a bit. The Brazos below PK is "Brazos near Graford", and the Brazos below Whitney is "Brazos near Aquilla". You can bookmark the ones that you want to use often, but if you understand the site you can find anything. This USGS site literally has thousands of lakes and rivers and the data is basically real-time - not days old. There is also a link there to a mobile app.

According to the BRA facebook page, The Brazos River Authority has closed the gate at Possum Kingdom Lake's Morris Sheppard Dam. The current low environmental flow is 220 cubic feet per second.

220 is easily doable.
