Of course it depends on weight and hook, but I use a far amount of size 5. But I tye mostly 1/8oz. A trick I do some times to make a "fatter body"is tye in at the head first instead of the the back. Then wrap back and then forward and then tye in at the head and finish... Hope this helps.

First know when it's Mylar is can be a lot larger than if its regular nylon or rayon/new age! My big crystal that I use a lot is #10 and even some #12. However mostly use #3 regular so can tie from small, like 1/32 or even smaller all the way up to 1/4oz! You have to double wrap anything larger than 1/16 though. If all you tie is bigger jigs like 1/8 or bigger then get larger stuff! I have used a ton of #2 chenille over the years and one thing about it is when you add Crystal in it, that makes it tie thinner. If tying with just chenille without crystal then it's more dense.

Hope this helps, but if not enough info ask more. There is more and with tying their seems to always be more if you want it, LOL!

Starting out is hard from the stand point of getting what you need to tie with. One of the better ways to learn what you need is order one of size you don't know or need on each order that you do need. The two best web sites and prices is Crazy Angler who has most of the needs of tying number 4 hooks. And chuck and debs which is a close out place that has just about ever thing for fishing or tying. Don't let the name fool you as it is over 500 page web site, and I get a lot of my hooks there, right now they are sold out of some sizes but in Jan. will start building up again.

I guess I am a cheapskate, but a thing I do to save material is tie in cheap yarn from Wally World, wrap the hook, then tie in the body head to tail, then wrap back up.

I got this off Danville's site. It's pretty useful.
