Wanted to take a short poll to see what most of us Texans prefer in the months of January & February. My brother picked up a fly rod for the first time and had much success with the striper and whites. He has never tied on anything smaller than a size 8 clouser, much less, targeted trout. So, I wanted to take him somewhere where I could put him in some fish...I've fished LFMR once and had wonderful success, but that was in September 2013. Never been to Guad...never targeted Trout in January-February, period. Heard the Guad is packed during those times? Is LFMR still busy in the winter?

I suspect that most of us make that decision based more on location than anything else and fish based which is closer.

The Guad is great, but to get access to most locations you should join the TU group. The LMF is public access and it does get a lot of pressure year round.

If you're coming from Lubbock, you might choose based on which one you can get to easiest.

Good luck! I went to school in Lubbock, and very few fishing spots were easy to get to.

I wasn't sure if LFMR had a fair amount of pressure during the winter? I heard the Guad could get shoulder-to-shoulder and I'm not much of a fan of that. Would rather have tough fishing to myself than the reciprocal.

it will be like that on the LMF as well. both places will be better during the week or during inclement weather. A float trip down the guad can be a lot of fun though.

Being in Lubbock I would head west to the San Juan. Lots of big fish, can be technical fishing; light tippet and small midges. Crowds are a lot lighter during the winter and there is plenty of water to spread out and have your own space.

LMF is better than Guad for trout. Still expect crowds weekends, but pretty empty weekdays in the winter. Lots more fish, too. Being in Lubbock, agree with others - check out San Juan in New Mexico. 20,000 fish per mile and good fishing all winter (dress warm!).
