Also the quality of work done. Bolts should be clean and not roughed up. High quality tools leave fewer marks. Quality tools shows a tech that has been around and values precision. He usually does not want a motor coming back.

Very good words of wisdom. The guy that values his work enough to invest in the best tools, usually

Thanks for all the wisdom the boat with the rebuild is out for me. There is no warranty on it even though it was done recently and some other issues came up I didn't like. Looks like the list of boats got shorter.
Oh it was the legend with the rebuild my list now has the ranger 19ft, bass cat 19ft, and a 21ft stratos on it.

The ranger would be my first pic. The year model you mentioned has a pultruded fiberglass transom.

There are 2 kinds of motors motors that have blown and ones that are going to blow. Whichever choice you make you will be getting one of these.

Have them checked at the shop, but don't pull the trigger until you have them on the lake. There really is no substitute for an on-water test.

Definitely test drive both boats and don't be scared to punch them. Then you will know what you're buying. If neither performs to your satisfaction keep looking. If either gives you any problems whatsoever run don't walk away.

An outboard always runs great right before it blows. I don't know why that is but it's true.

Depends but yea. 2 strokes run best lean. Lean = pop. That's one scenario and reason.
