There are no current fly fishing records for bluegill or sunfish on Lake Somerville. I started searching and fly fishing for Bluegill and Sunfish on Lake Somerville in August. I've caught quite a few 8.5 inch bluegill that weighed close to 0.5 lb., but I couldn't seem to catch one over 0.5 lb. Finally, this morning I was out fishing with a Betts popper catching some small longear and bluegill when I caught one that was 9 inches and weighed 0.60 lbs. I'm still looking for those 0.5 lb. redear, greenies and longear. I haven't caught anything close yet. It's getting close to trophy season though, so maybe I'll get lucky.

How deep were the fish? I am guessing after this latest cold front the fish will be moving into some deeper water. thumb

The lake is still over 6 feet high. The area I was fishing would normally be out of the water. The fish were holding in about 4 to 6 feet of water and coming up on a shallow 3 feet deep shelf and hitting on top water. I agree the fish will be headed deeper. I'm already starting to see winter patterns.

What an awesome fish. And a great way to catch it with the fly rod !

Best of luck in your search for the big red ear and other trophy sunfish. fish

Thanks, I was using a 5 weight with the popper. I carry a 4 weight with a subsurface fly as well. I just bought a 3 weight glass rod with BS-100 Teeny line that I plan to use for subsurface fishing this winter.

Thanks J-Moe for the reply. I also use a 5wt. I also love using the poppers. Seems they work year around and the Bluegill love em. Again congratulations on your fly fishing record Bluegill. woot
